- It's good but I don't think you've really captured the essence of charcoal. They're designed to be smudged. Excellent for shading. Also best used on larger pieces of paper. Always remember to "fix" your drawings. Spray them with a fixative from an art store or just some unscented hairspray. In my opinion, I think the $2 Aqua Net hairspray works better then the $12 fixative from an art store. Try doing shading with them. And trust me, you won't need a lot of charcoal to shade an entire picture.
