Hey thanks for commenting on my art! To answer your question, I paint all of my effects. Sometimes I'll find a texture pattern on a website and overlay it over top of everything. But for the most part I just paint everything. The best advice I can give is find reference. It makes life a lot easier and you learn a lot.
