CHAPTER 142 - YOUR DISTRACTIONS ARE USEFUL
Whenever I'm desperate for a distraction, I always end up feeling guilty because I think it's bad of me not to think of the suffering. Of course, if I think too much of the suffering, I could become a sufferer as well. I just hope I'll be distracted enough.
"It's about time you chose an inexpensive place," I huffed, taking a bite of my udon noodles.
"I figured a casual night out was what you needed," Kai smiled, twirling his chopsticks in his noodles.
I smiled faintly at him and continued eating. Kai had finally gotten his rest and we had permission to leave the mansion to go out to dinner. Kai and I never had any other dates except for dinners; we never went to movies or parks. I didn't mind that, so long as I was with Kai.
"We can venture to a park after this," Kai suggested.
I frowned, "Get out of my head,"
"It's interesting," he chuckled. "You like those hickeys that much?"
My face burned red and I lowered my head, "It's hard to get them out of my head if they're still so obvious," it was only two nights ago when Kai gave me the damned things.
"It would be worse if biting your neck was considered a hickey," he chuckled again. "That would be bad."
I looked up at him in concern, finishing the last of my food, "How long has it been since you've fed?"
Kai shrugged and set his chopsticks in his bowl, leaning back on the booth, "I don't know; almost a week."
I slapped my hands on the table, "Kai! That's bad for you!" I covered my mouth after noticing a few pairs of eyes watching me. I leaned in to whisper. "Why haven't you fed??"
"I was about to until our date," he shrugged again. "Then Mayura and Hitoshi interfered."
"I'm surprised you haven't attacked me yet," I admitted.
"You've lost enough blood as is," Kai shook his head. "If you're injured, I'll hold myself back."
I looked down, mumbling, "Should I let you go feed now?"
"No," I heard Kai say bluntly. He reached across the table after setting a check down and he gripped my hand. "Let's go to the park."
We both removed ourselves from the booth, slipped on our jackets, and left the restaurant with our arms linked together. I managed to go out without my crutches; I merely used Kai as most of my support. The air was humid with a cool breeze and the sky was completely clear; the moon wasn't visible but we could see every single star out in the sky. The faint sound of traffic was distant and the sidewalks were vacant. It was probably around nine at night so we had eaten somewhat late.
Everything was instantly calming me down and distracting me greatly from Kira's pain. I had almost forgotten that I saw him just that morning. I managed to erase his image from my head for the time being. I was wondering, however, if Kai was as distracted as I was. I was distracted even further after we reached what I assumed was the park. There were no swing sets or sandboxes; just an open field with numerous cherryblossom trees bordering the premises and at the center along with a pond to one side with a small wooden bridge arching over it. The rays from the street lights and the stars emulated off of the white bark of the cherryblossom trees and made their pink, closed buds shine as well.
"It's beautiful," I gaped in awe. I had never seen that park before. "It looks like a celestial maiden's sanctuary."
Kai chuckled, "I suppose it's yours, then,"
We made our way towards the center where the other group of trees were planted at and we emerged into them. It was a small circle of trees and we sat inside, leaning back against one tree. Kai leaned against the tree and I leaned my back against him and he wrapped his arms around me. His left arm was still a little limp but gradually getting better.
"How does it feel?" I touched his arm.
"It feels as though I fell asleep on it for fifty years,"
I giggled, "You would know what that feels like,"
"The bone is almost healed," Kai sighed somewhat irritably. "It's frustrating how much more time is consumed when healing from a Necromantic bullet."
"Should we go home?" I offered, not wanting him to wear himself out.
He leaned down and nuzzled my neck from behind, "No, we'll stay here,"
I looked up through the opening of the trees, "This is so beautiful, Kai; I'm glad we did this."
He didn't answer. Instead, he kissed my neck a few times from my shoulder up to my jaw. I gigged a few times at my sensitivity to tickling. I reached my hand up towards the endless sky and stared in awe. A few cherryblossoms were drafting down and they were shining a brilliant silver as they fell. A couple of them fluttered gently onto my head and Kai's head. Eventually, there was a beautiful graveyard of fresh petals all around us.
"We need trees like these," I whispered, removing my jacket.
"I agree," Kai mumbled, pressing his lips to my neck again.
I brushed my hair off of my neck for him; I knew what he wanted. It wouldn't be much longer until he wouldn't be capable of holding himself back any longer. I waited for several more seconds and then flinched once his lengthened, cuspidate fangs plunged into my neck. I groaned a little and leaned my head back against Kai's shoulder. He wrapped one arm around my torso and started drinking slowly. The sting lasted for a moment and then dissipated. A drop of blood trickled down my neck and onto my chest and I smiled faintly. I had actually missed being bitten by Kai; I couldn't remember how long it had been.
"Take as much as you want," I whispered, closing my eyes.
Another moment went by and the only sound was the continuous distant sound of traffic and the sound of Kai's thirst being satisfied. He broke the silence by inhaling deeply to prevent from drinking to immortality. We didn't know exactly how much blood needed to be drunk for that, but we didn't want to take any chances. I squirmed a little bit after feeling Kai's teeth putting a little more pressure on my neck.
"Kai..." I gripped his sleeve, flinching. "Kai, ow..."
I ran the fingers of my right hand through his hair as he held me a little tighter and bit me yet a little harder. I was becoming a little uncomfortable; the numbness of the wound was starting to fade and the pain was starting to surface. I gripped Kai's hair a little tighter and groaned. After that, he pulled away, catching his breath.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he breathed and cupped my face and turned my head towards him. "Arisa, I'm sorry..."
I shook my head, "No, I was just worried about you,"
Kai chuckled at himself, "And just a half hour ago, I told myself I wouldn't infiltrate you so long as you were wounded,"
"Doesn't matter," I leaned my head over a little to expose the blood. "Go ahead."
Kai leaned in once more and, instead of biting into me again, he started licking the blood up from around the wound. Some of the blood had trickled halfway down the middle of my chest and Kai swept it up with his middle finger and licked the blood off of that as well. He would stop every few seconds to wipe the remains off of his mouth before starting to lick again.
I giggled, "That tickles,"
Once I said that, Kai pressed his partially opened mouth against my skin and started sucking. I laughed out loud and tried to squirm away. Kai eventually made it into a game to see how long I could hold up. I didn't last long; I kept sinking lower and lower on my back onto the ground and Kai eventually switched us so he was lying above me and I was lying on the graveyard of cherryblossoms. The light from the stars emulating off of the tree bark made Kai's complexion shine.
"Have I ever told you," Kai started asking, brushing some of my hair behind my ear, "how beautiful you are at night?"
I shook my head, "I'm never out at night,"
The was a subtle sound of vibration and Kai reached into his pocket to pull out his cell phone. He answered it but spoke nothing out loud. His face became somewhat sad and he nodded, hanging up. He rested his head on my chest and heaved out a sigh.
"Matsuda advises us to stay in a hotel tonight," Kai mumbled. "Kira went mad."
My heart stopped for a moment, "Why?"
"Your blood," Kai mumbled again. "The scent of your blood made him mad. He tried to escape just a few minutes ago."
I sat up and faced away from Kai, trying to hide the tears about to tower over my bottom eyelids, "I-I thought my scent was concealed..."
Kai wrapped his arm around my shoulders and held me close to him, "No, don't feel guilty," he whispered to me. "He's too weak so I suppose the slightest scent of your blood could set him off."
I stood up and supported myself on a tree, feeling a little dizzy, "Let's just go," I mumbled.
I was the cause of Kira's madness. I was the cause of everybody's madness and suffering. I wish I didn't have such special blood. I wish I wasn't even born; then none of the suffering would have happened.
