I woke up to the awful sound of my mother busting down my door. I hadn’t even realized that I had fallen asleep. It was what I was trying not to do. I heard her shriek at the sight of the mirror on the floor and she went on about blood or something. Apparently, I had punched the mirror sometime a few hours before. I didn’t really recall even touching it, though. All I knew, at this point, was that I had a pounding headache and I felt very ill.
“Why are you and Mister Louie asleep in the same bed? Do you have no shame, child!?” She screeched.
Who the hell is Mister Louie? What are you going on about, mom? I gave her a funny look and she pointed behind me. I turned my head to see a very groggy looking man sitting there, rubbing his eyes. I screamed and flew out of my bed and landed face first on the floor.
“W-Who the hell are you?” I asked as I turned sharply to look at him.
I didn’t really recognize him at first, but I remembered what had happened just now. I didn’t want that beast in my house. He was a danger to me and my mother. Did she not enough notice those teeth of his?
“Ah…” He said with a yawn. “I’m Louie Halverson. I thought I already introduced myself earlier. I guess not.”
I couldn’t understand why he was being so nice. Just before, he’d bit me and almost killed me. I mean, I’ve never head of a story where a blood sucker waltzed into someone’s house and had no intention of doing any harm to its occupants. What kind of act was he trying to put on anyway? My mother was obviously buying into it, but I wasn’t going to be fooled.
“I think…” She cut herself off again, and left the room.
I really don’t think I was ever going to get used to that. She had just recently started going into that zombie like start and then she would never even remember what happened before hand. I guess losing father really had messed with her head. That was exactly why I couldn’t let myself get killed. It was all for her sake.
I really hadn’t noticed that Louie had moved next to me while I watched my mother. I really wouldn’t have cared if he hadn’t been at my side again. I gave him the harshest glare a young woman could even give, but he remained unaffected. I wasn’t surprised.
“Your mother is losing her mind, isn’t she?” He asked, helping me to my feet.
“What does it matter to you?” I snapped, jerking my hand away from him.
I didn’t realize it until I fell that Louie was the only thing holding me up. He grabbed me before I hit the floor and held me up again. He slowly walked me over to my bed and forced me to lie down before sitting at my feet. I really couldn’t stand him.
“Was it because of what happened to your father?” He asked, looking over at the collection of pictures I had sitting on my dresser. “I would imagine so. After all, that was a very tragic event and I would have guessed that you would have suffered, as well.”
I felt myself grow even angrier with him and kicked him. He had no right even mentioning what happened to my father. Though, I also wanted to know where he heard about what happened. Did mother tell him? It could be just like her to go and blab on about things like that.
“How did you know about what happened to my father?” I asked.
Louie looked at me and then at the ground. He wasn’t going to answer that question no matter how many times I chose to ask it. I could tell just by how he reacted. Mother did the same thing when she didn’t want to answer me.
“You know you committed a great sin earlier.” He mumbled. “Being a hunter, you should have known better.”
I stared at him for a second and he pointed to my right hand, the one that wasn’t bandaged. I blinked and stared at it. I didn’t know what he was telling me at first, but then it hit me like a ton of bricks. He smiled when he saw that I finally understood what he was talking about.
“That was-‘’ I gasped, only to be cut off by him.
“The council would see it as willingly offering yourself to me.” He said as he looked away again. “So you would be tried as a traitor and sentenced to death. I think you’d find it wise to stick with me for a while.”
