It’s been 6 years since then. I’m now a freshmen in high school and I couldn’t be happier. Well that’s not the whole truth. I could be a whole lot happier if all the ghost would just leave alone, but know they just have to come to me. Or at least that’s what they tell me. They say that I’m the only one that can see them. One ghost said that he met a person that sort of could sense him, but couldn’t fully see him.
“Oh and that’s not good enough for you?” I asked.. He shook his head and said “Nope.” In a cheerful tone. I snorted. Of course it isn’t. I pulled my blue hairbrush through my short dull brown hair. I let out a sigh and tossed my brush onto the dresser. I don’t know why I even bother. I’m just going to be dull and boring for the rest of my life. There was a knock on my door.
“Sammy…you…okay?” My Dad asked between hiccups. I stepped back and scanned my room. I picked up the dirty clothes laying all over the place and threw them into my closet.
“Yeah Dad I’m great,” I said picking up some old empty water and G2 bottles and threw them into my waste basket. “What’s up?” I asked him through the door. There was a sound like a bottle being tipped back and liquid swishing around.
“Nothing…much.” He said. I kicked some dirty plates under my bed and sat down on the floor, picked up my TV remote, and began to flick through the channels. The door creaked open and Dad came into full view. He had an old flask in one hand and a liquor bottle in the other. With his favorite ACDC t-shirt on backwards, and in his best boxers.
“Hey honey…what you doin?” He asked taking another drink from his flask. I shrugged settling on the Disney channel.
“Nothing,” I said dropping the remote to the floor and pulling my knees to my chin. “Just watching some TV.” He belched raising a fist to his chest.
“That’s cool what’s on?” He asked walking over and falling down beside me.
“Suite Life of Zack and Cody.” I muttered training my eyes on the brightly lit TV screen. Dad let out a chuckle.
“C-Cool,” He said. I could smell booze and peppermint on his breath. I turned my head gagging from the smell. He let out a yawn and stretched. “Those twins have a suite life. Get it, a suite life.” He laughed. I rolled my eyes and tucked my knees under my chin.
“Yeah Dad that’s why it’s called Suite life of Zack and Cody.” He poked me in my ribs. I glanced over and saw him eyeing me.
“Hey what crawled up your butt and died.” He said taking another drink. I shook my head and muttered “Nothing.” and stood up. He pointed his fat index finger at me.
“Then l-lose the attitude little missy.” He touched his lips to the flask and took another drink. I shook my head
“Whatever.” I walked over to the window with the big crack running down it.
“Hey Dad when are you going to fix my window?” I asked. He looked over his shoulder coughing.
“Fix…what?” He asked covering his mouth hacking his lungs out. Of course he forgot. I mean he always does. I placed my hands on my hips and stroke a pose.
“Your kidding me right.” I said. He shook his head and belched yet again. If he belches one more time without saying excuse me I am totally kicking him out of my room. I thought.
“No joke.” He said taking yet another drink from his flask. I let out a scream of frustration pointing towards the window.
“This window needs to be repaired, but your always to drunk to do anything anymore.” I looked down seeing my ‘Think Global Act Local’ t-shirt.
“Now stop right there young lady,” He stood up and placed both the flask and the liquor bottle next to the TV. “I-I’m not always d-drunk.” He stumbled towards me. I snorted and rolled my eyes.
“Oh please! Your always, and I mean always drunk.” He rose his hand silencing me. I stood there waiting for what he had to say. When he did finally speak I was surprised he wasn’t slurring his words.
“Samantha you know that it’s been hard since your Mom died-” I didn’t let him say another word. “Oh no don’t blame Mom’s death for your drinking. We all know you did it willingly.” He drew his gaze down knowing I was right.
“I know it’s my own fault…but Sammy, honey my drinking is part of your Mom passing away…I really miss her honey and I guess my drinking takes some of the pain away.” I turned my head away. It wasn’t his fault…it wasn’t anybodies fault. I spun around not wanting him to see me cry.
“Yeah your right sorry Dad.” I said. I wiped my eyes of the tears that escaped and walked over to my bed and sat down on the plush clean sheets. I picked up the picture of Mom that sat on my nightstand and stared at her smiling face. Dad sat down beside me and patted my knee.
“I know…I miss her too.” I nodded. “Yeah.” I said in a whisper. He took a deep breath and let it out in a rush.
“You know that woman you met at my faculty party last month.” He said combing his fingers through his short brown hair.
“Yeah…Miss Miller right?” He nodded. “Yeah Miss Miller.” I drew my finger down the frame of the picture knowing what was coming.
“She asked me out to dinner.” He said his hands clasping together. He bent his head down, his breathing now slow and steady. I sighed.
“You should say yes.” I gritted my teeth after uttering those words. His head snapped up.
“Really?” He asked looking over at me. I nodded.
“Yeah you should go out with Miss Miller. I mean she nice, pretty, smart, and she seems to really like you.” He smiled.
“Yeah she does doesn’t she….” How should I know. I thought rolling my eyes. He slapped his knees and stood up.
“Alright I’ll go call her.” He began to walk out my room.
“Hey Dad.” He looked over his shoulder.
“Yeah honey.” He said. A laugh escaped my lips.
“You might want to shower and shave before going out with Miss Miller.” He rubbed his stubbly chin and grinned.
“Yeah, your probably right.” He walked out and start into a ghost. I cringed when he stopped and shivered. I stood up to confront this ghost. I started towards the ghost. He had short blonde hair with light brown eyes.
