I walked with my lover across a feild of flowers. We had not seen each other for such a long time. My white dress flowed as the wind blew gently. I could hear the sound of crickets and cicadas. I held him by the crook of his arm and snuggled into his shoulder. He swollowed hard. "I need to tell you something," he told me, without looking in my eyes.
"What is it, love?" I looked up at him with a smile.
"Well . . .," he sighed and took his arm out from both of mine. My smile fell and we stopped walking. My love bit his bottom lip and squeezed his eyes shut. With another sigh, he began again, "I don't think we're going to work out."
Everything stopped. My eyes widened and my mouth fell open some. He diverted his eyes from mine. I couldn't breathe, I couldn't move. Why didn't he love me anymore? What did I do? I did the first thing that came to mind. I smiled,"It's okay. I understand."
He looked up at me with surprise. "Are you okay?" he looked down, ashamed. I shook my head and lifted his face to mine. With one last kiss, I smiled and told him that if he wanted to leave, I wasn't going to stop him. He searched my eyes and then his soften. "I love you, but . . . I'm sorry," his voice was hollow, rasp. He turned from me and walked away.
Watching him as he left, I held my hair so it wouldn't blow in my face. With the cresent moon high above me and the brilliant blue flowers at my feet, I watched my life, my soul, my heart walk away. I forced back my tears for if he saw them, he would feel bad. I didn't want him to feel anymore pain. I had made him suffer enough. I wasn't selfish enough to put my burden on him.
