Chapter 50
Execution House
I slipped backwards onto the pavement. “Dammit,” I muttered as I realized my hands were soaking in chilling puddles. Edan reached out his hand to mine as I grumbled, “I’m such a clutz.” Edan laughed quietly gently helping me up off the wet damp ground. I wiped the wet dirt of my navy blue skirt that fell just to my knees, “Why are you laughing.”
“Because,” he bantered quietly, not letting go of my hand. He squeezed it tightly, “your cute that’s why.”
“Whatever floats you boat,” I protested.
“Are you denying it?”
“Yes I am because there is obviously something wrong with you,” I held tighter to his hand as we continued to walk down the soggy sidewalk.
“Whatever floats your boat,” he smirked. I blushed heavily shrugging my shoulders before I felt something grab them.
“Edan,” I stuttered, “tell me that’s you.”
“I wish I could.” I was turned around, being forced to let go of Edan’s hand. I closed my eyes, not wanting to see what was happening. I promptly latched on tightly to his hand again. “Just relax Hai everything is going to be fine.” He loosened my grip and pulled my hand away.
“Edan is this the girl you were with?” A deep voice asked sternly as I shivered.
Edan paused before answering, “Yes.”
“Both of you are to come with us.” I felt the pair of hands grab on tighter to my shoulders.
“Wait,” Edan called, “I’ll take her there.” The hands let go of me as I felt Edan’s familiar arm wrap around the back of my shoulders. But instead of him trusting me on his back he picked me up and cradled me like a baby. I held on tight to his arm as he started run. Oh God, I prayed, what’s going on? Is anyone going to get hurt? Oh please Lord don’t let that happen. Please don’t let that happen. Everything stopped as Edan set me down, but I stubbornly refused to let go of his arm. “Hai you need to let go.”
“No,” I pursued, holding on with as much force as my frail arms allowed. “I don’t want to let go!” I started to cry, still not opening my eyes.
“You need to Hai,” he muttered.
“No I don’t.” Edan sighed and started pulling me away.
I felt the cold pair of hands on my shoulders again, “Miss you must come with me.”
I tried to struggle away, “No I will not!”
“You must Miss; Lady’s orders.” Lady’s orders? I opened my eyes cautiously, greeted by a large stoned castle, not the kind you saw in fairytales. The build was chipped and the façade was dripping vines and mold. Towers overlook the depressing scenery of dying grass and petrified trees.
I glanced over at Edan; hands held securely behind his back by a man enclosed completely in black except for his pale skin that only shown on his face. Edan nodded telling me to go with the identically attired man holding my shoulders. “Go Hai,” he said unsympathetically.
“This way Miss.” I was tugged up to a gloaming door, worn and rotting, Edan easily lead the other way. The man simply pulled open the flaky golden lion head creating the entrance and the worry that was building up in my chest.
“What’s going on? Who are you? Who is this Lady you speak of? What am I doing here?” I mustered up my courage and shoved it in my words unsuccessfully hoping that it would cover up the fear I was feeling.
“I speak of Lady Mauve, I am one of her guards and by her order was sent to retrieve you,” his tone was emotionless and detached.
“Why me w-what have I done?”
He continued to speak with perfect blasé, “You know of our secret Miss.”
“What secret?”
“Our existence, the existence of vampires, you knowing is against the rules.”
“A-against the r-rules?”
“No need to worry Miss, no harm will become of you, everyone has been ordered by Lady Mauve herself to treat you with the utmost respect.”
“Then why am I here in the first place?”
“For you, Miss, there is no punishment for knowing. We will only need to work out a small deal with you.”
I breathed heavily, “If there is no punishment for me……… then who does get the punishment?”
“Edan, Miss, he was the one who revealed the secret to you and if he is found guilty of doing so by the council then he will receive the consequence.”
“A-and what would that be?” I choked on the words praying unflaggingly that I wouldn’t hear the word. The one word that practically ruled my entire life. The word that would make that place more than just a lingering fortress.
“Death.” The word that made it an execution house.
