Finding Croissant
*Smack* A branch hit Lake in the face.
“OWW” She said while rubbing her cheek and brushing the light brown hair out of her face.
“Come on lake we have to find croissant before it gets dark and its already 7:00!” Kira exclaimed. Croissant was Lakes pet winged mountain lion, and had been her since she was a year old.
“I think we should go back now Lake” Kira said. Even with the dense cover of Mongo Trees the girls could still see a little bit of sun, but it was quickly going down. The small bit of sun still made Kira’s blond hair shine.
“I guess so Kira, I’m just soo concerned for croissant.” Lake slowly said. Kira started talking about how winged mountain lions have been introduced through out the world and how well they did…., but Lake looked down at the ground instead of listening, a small ant made its was across the leaf going somewhere. She thought about crushing it out of sadness of not being able to find croissant but decided not to.
‘It’s a living breathing thing also lake, think of how you would feel as an ant being crushed for nothing’ She thought to her self. She was ripped out of her thoughts when Kira called her name.
“Yeah?” She asked.
“Come on we have to go,” Kira started walking, then added, ”As I was saying they have had memories passed down from generations in their head therefore-“
“Kira your such a nerd what do you get on a test a B?” Lake said joking.
“Whatever, But I get A’s.” Kira gave her a smile and Lake just shook her head.
As Kira and Lake emerged out of the forest they looked across the meadow to see the Academy’s gates slowly creaking closed and shutting with a dull boom.
“Hello Miss would you care to climb the wall with me?” Lake said in a funny fake British accent.
“I would be delighted.” Kira replied in a funnier fake British accent. Both girls laughed.
The pair made there way to the wall as if they were in a ballroom, small dainty steps and with their hands out as if they were holding up their long flowing skirts.
When they finally advanced on the wall both of their faces turned up to the sky searching for the top of the wall.
“Well we better get started.” Kira said stepping forward and placing both hands on the wall.
“At least they didn’t make the wall very fancy and give us no handholds.” Lake commented.
Kira was already 10 feet up on the wall.
“Well, are you coming lake? Or are you waiting for the grass to grow?” Kira teased.
Lake started up the wall slowly and cautiously, but soon found out that it wasn’t hard at all and soon caught up to Kira.
“Do you think if we told ‘The Escaping from Monsters’ teacher that we climbed the wall that we would get extra credit?” Kira asked after a couple minutes of silent climbing.
“Probably but with a couple of spell finders with it.” Lake laughed. Kira remembered her last one, they made her find 20 4 leaf clovers! Looking up she saw they were almost there.
When they reached the top both of them stood up and cracked their back on the chariot wide platform.
“Why did they make the wall so big and thick?” Lake asked, Kira knew almost all the history about the academy and that it was a little scary.
“Well they wanted to have guards on the top of the walls patrolling because as I've told you before this used to be a castle and they are so tall because-“ Kira and Lake heard a pebble fall off the wall and looked down, on the inside, to see Zaine’ Gray climbing up.
“Oh wow he’s probably sneaking off to a party.” Lake said in disgust.
“Whatever, Lets just go.” Kira said walking away from where he was climbing up and slowly sat on the edge getting ready to make her way down. Suddenly Zaine’ was behind them both and said, “Sneaking back in are we, shame, shame.” He then adding tisk, tisk noises.
“Very mature Zaine’.” Lake shot at him. Zaine was the most popular guy in the school but at the same time he was the biggest jerk too.
“Feisty one aren’t you, I remember now you’re Lake Nelson. You always were a little fire ball.” Zaine’ said in a mean voice.
‘How the hell does he know you are mostly fire!’ Kira’s voice said in her head.
“Whatever I’m leav-“ Out of the corner of her eye she saw Black guys slowly sneaking up on the three of them.
“Uh Kira move over a little.” Lake asked in a hushed voice.
Kira did as she was told but asked why, but Lake had already sent out a huge fireball and hit one guy in the chest and another in the leg. Kira picked up on what was transpiring fast and took out her water bottle and pulled it out with her powers. She then lashed it out and cut off the guys arm and pushed him over the edge. ‘3 down 2 to go’ Lake thought seeing two more guys. She then sent out a blade of fire slicing the next guy in half. Kira had finished off her guy with a push of water off the edge of the wall. As the girls turned around they saw Zaine’s wide eyes and burst into laughter.
“Oh. My. Gosh.” was all Zaine’ said.
After Zaine’ was back to being a jerk, lake and Kira started to climb down the wall.
“Hey wait up guys!” Zaine’ called down.
“Never.” Lake yelled back up at him. Both of them went faster but Zaine’ caught up just as they started walking away from the wall through the orchard.
“What the hell was that?” Zane’ asked like a small boy.
“Its called fi-re and wa-ter.” Kira said as if teaching a kindergartener.
“No, are you guys…level tens?”
That made Lake think of when she was first introduced to what all this was. She was super mad at her mom and slammed the door and then proceeded to get even madder when her mom said she was grounded, so she stared down the door and it lit on fire. After that event her mom didn’t want her doing stupid stuff, so her mom sent her to the academy, where all the stupid classes seemed to blend together. But the levels class was different, she was paired with people who had the same level power as her and she kept switching classes because her fire was always getting stronger, until she was with Kira. Then it stopped at a level 9, one under from the highest level of ten possible. Many people didn’t get the levels but hey just think of it as a video game, the higher the number the higher the power. After a month or so of being a nine the teacher pulled her aside one day and told her of the evil people called Marrs. They wanted more and more power trying to steal it from others, but it hadn’t worked. So far all their experiments had gone wrong and took many peoples’ lives. They were called the Marrs group because of their eyes, the color of mars from all the corruption in their souls. Lake remembers the question Zaine’ asked and pushed herself back to reality.
“No I’m a nine, not ten.” She said coolly.
“And I’m a 9 too.” Kira added.
“Wow.” Was yet again the only thing Zaine’ could say.
When they got in sight of the patrollers they all crept to the kitchen’s back door, and slowly opened it with a moan. Kira and Zaine’ walked in but Lake looked back to see a guy with a bow. A millisecond later an arrow hit the side of the wall and stuck in with a thunk. The man seeing that the arrow had missed quickly ran to the other side of the wall and skirted down. Lake looked at the arrow again, then quietly went in to see Kira eating and Zaine’ sitting there cracking jokes. Grabbing a hunk of bread she sat on a stool and tasted the rich bread meant for the instructors.
“We never get the bread this good Kira” Lake exclaimed taking another bite of it.
“I know our bread sucks that they give us.” Kira replied adding,” I'm glad I remembered this door or else I would have just eaten a wrapped piece of daisy bread from yesterday.”
“How did you guys get so powerful while I was left with zapping?” Zaine’ asked them randomly.
“What is zapping?” Both asked at the same time.
“Well I kind of have energy as my power and it’s only a level three at most. So if I do a small lightning bolt it only comes out as a zap.” Zaine’ said sadly. He then added,” So what’s your secret for success?”
“Well,” Kira started. “Both my parent were really strong so I got it but my brother didn’t, so we don’t exactly know if it is how powerful your parents are randomly selected.”
“And my parents,” Lake said, “Didn’t even know really about this, they were tested and had level one fire, but I have a level nine so we don’t really know.”
“Okay I’m going with random because my mom was a storm like literally, water and wind at nines and energy at eight. And my dad was wonderful with making things he just knew how to put them together and had a great force field. He is dead though.” Zaine’ frowned.
“So your kinda a letdown to your family?” Kira asked finishing her bread and brushing the crumbs off her.
“Yeah even my twelve year old brother is stronger than me.” Zaine’ frowned.
“Aww I'm sorry.” Lake said and yawned,” Kira I think we should look for croissant tomorrow. They knew we were on the wall so I think they know about croissant.”
“Okay Ill meet you 4:00 am under the pear tree with purple bananas?” Kira asked.
“Sure sounds great I'm going to bed.” Lake said getting up and stretching her back.”
“I better go to.” Kira added,” bye Zaine’.”
“Bye.” Zaine’ said back.
‘Maybe they’re cooler than I thought.’ Zaine’ Said in his mind, as he walked to his room.
As Lake entered her plain box bedroom she saw a note on the ground, it was just a list from Kira. She put it on the dresser and flopped onto her dark purple bed looking at the yellow star stickers on the ceiling. She got up to pack, as a note floated to the ground. ‘Another Note?” she thought. When she picked the note up she heard footsteps quickly coming down the hall. Hastily shutting the light off and jumping into her bed she pulled the sheets down over her clothes just as the door opened she counted her breaths making them steady and even. The person stayed a minute, then satisfied closed the door and continued down the hallway. ‘There is another reason why I hate the academy, all the rules.’ She thought.
She slowly climbed out of bed really wanting to stay in it’s warmtn. Turning on the light, she opened her hand to where the note was but nothing was there. ‘How odd?’ Getting over this oddity she got into p.j’s and packed some stuff for tomorrow. She slowly went back bed and fell right asleep.
Waking up to her annoying alarm the next morning Lake packed a small treat for croissant ‘if she ever finds her.’ She thought sadly. Walking silently through the hallways she was getting happier by the moment with the thoughts that soon she would be able to get away from this place. When she finally got outside, she inhaled a deep breath of fresh air.
She started off by taking long strides, making her way to the start of the orchard. After a minute or so she thought she heard footsteps following her. Crouching down as if to tie her shoe she listened. she did hear footsteps but only a few before they stopped.
Silently she stalked over to a tree and saw a gray sleeve hiding behind it. She counted to three and then pounced on the person. Looking up to a face she saw a confused Zaine’.
“What was that for?” He asked looking a bit mad.
“Why are you following me?” Lake asked back.
“I was going to the pear tree with purple bananas, but I didn’t know where it was so I just followed you.” Zaine’ said giving a small smile.
“Well you- wait why are you going to the pear tree with purple bananas? And if your gonna say that you will help us, you will just slow us down.” Lake said
“Well I-“ He stopped as he saw Lake already walking away.
He slowly followed, trying not to make as much noise this time.
When Lake got to the pear tree with purple bananas, Kira was already waiting in the branches.
“Please tell Zaine’ he can’t come!” She angrily whispered into the branches.
“Why not?” Kira asked.
“Well because…. He’s well…. I don’t know!” Lake was getting frustrated.
“Then he can.” Kira said just as Zaine’ got to the tree.
“Hey Kira.” Zaine’ said giving a small wave.
“Hi come on lets go.” Kira said jumping out of the tree and marched towards the stables.
“Why are we going this way?” Lake asked
“I have a reason, did you get a good grade last trimester for equestrian class?” Kira asked. Lake was getting a bad feeling about this.
“Well it was pretty good. Why, Wait Kira…you wouldn’t-Kira we can’t.” Lake whined.
“I would. but we aren’t technically stealing the horses. We are just borrowing them.” Kira made a good point.
They made their way to the stables and opened the big wooden doors. The smell of hay and dust tickled Kira’s nose and made her sneeze. Lake walked to Romeo her assigned horse’s stall. When she got there Romeo was half asleep. His Black body was covered in small pieces of bedding.
“Hey buddy.” Lake said quietly to him. He slowly opened his eyes. Lake went and got a brush and finished grooming him quickly, then picked his dark hooves.
While she was going to get his tack she saw Zaine’ in Rosey's stall.
“How did you manage to get Rosey?” asked Lake. Zaine’ smiled. Rosey was one of the best horses in the stable out of Eighty two horses. She was chestnut with big long legs and a long body.
“I’m not a kiss up for nothing.” He said as he got back to work on one of her feet. Lake just laughed and continued on to the tack room. Once there she selected Romeo’s saddle, bridle, crupper, and breast collar. Taking it back she saw Zaine’ give Rosey a quick kiss on the nose. How is it that he treats people like dirt and a horse like royalty? She quickly got Romeo’s saddle on and breast collar, but he didn’t want to take the bit. So she stuck her finger in behind his teeth to make him open his mouth. Quickly sliding the bit in she snapped the bridle on the right setting and led him out into the isle. Zaine’ was almost done and Kira was opening her door. Lake wondered who Kira had as a horse and soon found out when Fireburst, a pretty white Arabian, stepped out of his stall.
“How did you manage to get him?” Lake asked,” Did you use your mind game, Kira?”
“How did you know?” Kira asked, petting FireBurst’s long sleek neck.
“Maybe, because you use it on me!” Lake joked.
Zaine’ stepped out of the stall with Rosey following behind. He went over quickly and shut the front door and walked back to them.
All three walked to the back door and opened it into the big meadow, as the sun was coming over the mountains in the distance.
“Ready?” Kira asked Lake.
“Yes I am.” Lake mounted and took off through the meadow. FireBurst quickly caught up and so did Rosey. They kept up the pace until they were almost at the forests edge. All three horses slowed to a trot as if something was scaring them. then they all three halted.
“What’s wrong?” Lake asked Kira
“ I don’t know.” Kira replied, but just then a black hood popped out of the long yellow grass. Both the girl screamed but got it together as Lake gave a burst of fire. More guys had popped out of the grass and one had Croissant! She sent a huge ball of fire at him and hit him in the arm, dropping croissant. She tried to get Romeo to go but one of the guys was playing with Romeo’s mind so she got off. Another guy picked up the Croissant’s cage and called a horse and started rising away. More people were coming up on her. Lake lashed out at three guys surrounding her then jumped back on Romeo and gave him a small burn hoping to get him out of his trance. Romeo, shocked he was burnt burst out at a gallop. Turning him towards the guy she was slowly catching up to him.
Out of nowhere a ring of fire surrounded them and the guy’s horse stopped. She pulled in Romeo to and slid off.
“Hello.” The guy waved with the hand not holding Croissant.
“Put him down” Lake said.
“Now why should I do that?” He asked.
Lake sent out a stream of fire as it was almost halfway there the guy sent his fire making the fires clash together and fighting, the man’s fire slowly winning over hers. Just as his fire was about to win, a lightning strike hit him in the chest knocking him over and making him still. Lake ran over and melted the bars of the cage, freeing Croissant just as he burst into the sky. She watched him make a twirl and then land back down a few leaps away from her running over to her and into her arms. She got out his treat and scratched his head making him purr. Kira came up too them after extinguishing the flames.
“Did you see what Zaine’ did?!” Kira exclaimed.
“Uh no.” Lake answered, setting croissant down and grabbing the guy’s horse. She made the reins longer and got on Romeo. Kira rounded up FireBurst and told her how the lightning bolt was Zaine’s. They walked over to him.
“Thanks Zaine’.“ Lake said giving him a hug.
“I did it! I'm not a zapper anymore!” Zaine’ said over and over.
“Okay come on guys let’s go.” Kira said mounting FireBurst.
They all rode back to the academy and all at once Lake felt happy, she had Croissant back and a new friend. They made there way to the stables and sneaked the horses back in, then went to their rooms. When she got in she found a small note on her bed, ‘its not over’, was all it said.
