How do you expect me to listen?
How do you expect me to listen when you
Raise your finger and preach to me the
Ground rules of property that isn't even yours?
How do you expect me to listen when we
Are constantly interrupted by the television as it
Spits out news of disasters that only tell me the American dream is a lie?
How do you expect me to see?
How do you expect me to see when I
Am blinded by the explosions and mushroom clouds of
Various bombs being dropped from the heavens?
How do you expect me to see when the
Ash and rubble of a destroyed city drifts down and
Renders me sightless in a storm of dust?
How do you expect me to feel?
How do you expect me to feel when I
See family hurt, see friends hurt,
See strangers hurt to the point that I am numb?
How do you expect me to feel when the
Flames of burning buildings are so hot, or
The very air of death is so cold my skin is beyond pain?
How do you expect me to run?
How do you expect me to run as my
Brothers in arms fall before my eyes and
I live the rest of my days with their motionless bodies in my memory?
How do you expect me to run even though
My heart and soul can feel pain, but
My sweat-drenched body has learned to never surrender?
How do you expect me to choose?
How do you expect me to choose between
Letting you win or die trying my
Hardest to make you lose?
How do you expect me to choose when you
Attempt to lessen my will even as you hold a
Gun to my best friend's head, your index resting on the trigger?
How do you expect me to die?
How do you expect me to die when I
Have to survive if I want to see my home again,
My family again, my friends again?
How do you expect me to die when all
I am fighting for will be lost if I
Even bother considering that option?
How do you expect me to quit?

- Title: How Do You Expect...
- Artist: Poetic Progression
- Description: I wrote this for the soldiers serving for their countries, fighting to preserve the belief in freedom. I wrote this in the point of view of a soldier -- I hope I got the mindset accurate. And don't bother me about the lack of rhymes. I know about it, I didn't rhyme on purpose.
