Chapter I The Message
It began, as things of this manner are wont to do, with a whim. Looking back, Zil Samo thought it was not actually such a good idea. As he sat in front of the screen, perspiration built up, dampening his brand new shirt. Almost there... just one more... come on... CA-CHTHUNK! "YES!" shouted Zil as a message popped up, informing him that he had won 300 gold, "I did an Insanity puzzle! Hoo-Hah! Alrighty, then. Lesse- WUH!?" The screen had gone black. "What the crap!?" Text had started to appear on the screen. <Well done, Zil Samo,> it said. Zil stared at the screen, seeing but refusing to accept the evidence that his eyes were giving him. The text continued. <You have exemplary skills. Be on the look out.> The screen returned to normal, displaying his avitar's inventory. Be on the lookout? What for? Am I hallucinating? He pinched himself. Ouch, pain. Oh...kay. Pain=probably not hallucinating then. So, what happens now? "John!!!" his father shouted from the base of the stairs, shaking him out of his reverie, "Are you doing your homework?" Oh, yes. His father, constantly on his case. Every day after school, it was the same conversation, except with slightly different details, as if a bored screenwriter had hoped his audience wouldn't notice if pieces of past episodes were simply spliced together in the same predictable formula. "Yes..." came John's traditional lie. His father would not get off his back until the ritual was completed. "Are you sure?" "Yes, Dad, I'm sure..." Geez. Every frickin' day... ugh. this is why I like video games - no Dad or Mom getting on my case over some stupid assignment. "Johnathan!" His mom, this time. "Dinner's in about five minutes!" "Al right! Be down in a sec'!" As if... "I'm holding you to that, John! If you're not down here, you'll have to serve yourself!" That got John moving. He logged off, being careful that the computer was completely done before shutting off the power.
