story report for school about "The City Of Ember" I had to bring in a new character. I made her like me........ i hope you like it
Doon and Lina were walking alongside the slow-flowing, aquamarine river, admiring what Ember never had, when suddenly; they heard a loud cracking noise from behind them. Lina was so alarmed by it, she nearly jumped on Doon, and Doon just pushed Lina off to get closer. She stayed away from the sound, thinking it might be dangerous. He heard the noise again and so he jumped back quickly. He saw a shadow breaking up out of the corner of his eye, so he looked towards it and started to get closer to it. Lina kept trying to stop Doon from getting any closer but pulling on his shirt and whimpering. He just glowered down at her, as if he was saying, “Get off and let me go.” She dropped his sleeve and watched him sneak over to the strange shadow. After a few steps he screamed. “WHAT IS THAT?!” He yelled. Lina ran over to see what he was talking about. She looked down to see a girl about their age staring up at her with large, beautiful lime green eyes. She had something in her arms that was fuzzy and small. The thing in her arms was reddish-brown with white at the end of its feet, its muzzle-like mouth, and its tail. She was staring up with a callous expression, not smiling or anything, just a face as blank as the old darkness in Ember. She was petting the creature, still, and making complete eye contact with Doon. He wasn’t glaring like he was when he looked at Lina; he was actually smiling a little. “Who are you?” she asked, still with an absolute void face. “I’m Doon Harrow, and this is my friend Lina Mayfleet… Who are you?” He asked, smiling a little wider now. “Hato.” She said calmly, and then she looked down at the creature on her lap. “Why were you alarmed by my pet?” she asked. She was like some sort of robot for the way she talked; proper and quiet. “Well… Lina and I come from a place deep underground that—…“ Her eyes then lit up and she jumped up, knocking the creature off her lap. It looked alarmed by her sudden motion and so it looked up at her with beady eyes and barked. “EMBER?!” She squealed happily, now smiling as wide as she could, her teeth as white as pearls, and her eyes as big as limes. “Yea, we come from Ember.” Her face dropped suddenly and she frowned at him. “No, Doon Harrow. Fire!” she said, glaring at him and pointing behind him. “Oh no…” Doon said, looking back at the small flare of fire behind him on a small blade of grass. It was spreading pretty slowly, but it cracked like an exited crowd like it was going to grow really big really fast. “No, that’s good! We can eat, Bachi!” she said happily, looking down at her pet. It barked and jumped around, seemingly exited. Hato, the girl, then grabbed something from behind a bush. It was big and shiny, with blue scales all over it. It had fins and it was dripping water. Hato grabbed a stick and stabbed it through the mouth of the blue, scaly thing and stuck it over the small fire on the ground. “Um…” Lina started to talk, “Where did that fire come from?” Hato looked up with her endearing eyes, her scarlet hair flowing in the wind and coals of the fire in front of her. “Spontaneous combustion?” She asked in a sweet voice. Doon stared at her like she was insane, but realized something. “Maybe one of the matches fell out of my back pocket and your pet stepped on it, causing friction, making it ignite and catch fire…?” Hato stared at him and made some sort of a humming noise as if she were thinking. “Errrrrrmmmmmmm….. Sure, let’s go with that… HAH! The fish is ready!” she howled, making “Bachi”, her pet, run over to her and wave its fluffy tail back and forth eagerly. “But… None for you.” She said, looking down at Bachi. Bachi just whined loudly and looked down at the ground. “I’m just kidding!” Hato said, smiling down at Bachi. “You can have the tail and fins.” She said, taking a huge bite of the “fish”. Lina and Doon stared at her like starving puppies, watching her take the biggest bites of food they’ve ever seen anyone take. “Can we have some?” Lina asked. “No. I don’t trust either of you, so go find your own fish. I had to find mine, you have to find your’s. Fair is fair.” Hato said, taking another bite. Doon looked behind her and his grey eyes lit up and he opened his mouth, as if to say something, pointing behind her with a terrified expression on his tan face. “What?” Hato murmured with food in her mouth, barely looking up at him. “Th-The fire…” He faltered. “What about it?” She asked, looking all the way up at him now, “I-It’s… Getting bigger…” He said, still pointing at it. Hato’s face dropped and she looked behind her, just to see a huge swathe of fire and sparks mounting and growing, bugger and hotter. “…Oh… I get it now…” She said, looking just as terrified as Doon. “RUN!” Lina screeched, jumping back as the fire almost touched the tip of her shoe. Doon ran, leaving Hato in the wrap of fire. But little did they know she was a master of escape. She ran over, grabbed Bachi quickly, and ran STRAIGHT THROUGH THE FIRE. If you know anything about fire, you’ll know that if you go fast enough, fire can’t hurt you or even touch you. She did, however, get covered in soot and ashes from the fire. “WE MADE IT!” She yelled, holding Bachi up in the air like the monkey did in the movie The Lion King. Doon and Lina both kept running from the growing fire, but they looked back at her and smiled. Doon gave her a thumbs up and then yelled, “Come on, Hato! Hurry up!” SO Hato ran as fast as she could up to them, and then they were surrounded again. All three of them were looking around for a way out of the caressing embers, and Hato kept trying to escape by running through the fire, but it was too broad, and would’ve scorched her. But then she tried one last time, holding onto Doon and Lina’s sleeves. And what happened? They sprinted straight through the fire, yes. But they landed, not on solid ground, but crashed into the river with a huge wave of water casing them completely under it. Hato opened her eyes underwater in search of Bachi. She swam deeper and deeper into the water, even though it hurt her eyes and ears; she wasn’t going to give up Bachi for anything, not even her life. She flipped over rocks and thrashed to stay under, but she ran out of breath and had to come up. When she came up, she closed her eyes tight, getting the water from them. “WH-Where’s My Bachi?” she asked vulnerably, almost in tears. She waded herself to the rocks on the side of the river and finally opened her eyes. She saw Doon’s feet at eyelevel, so she looked up. She then howled with happiness and jumped out of the river. “I grabbed her at the last second,” Doon said, perceptibly out of breath, holding Bachi out, smiling a little like when he found Hato. “Oh my gosh, thank you so much!” Hato said, taking the soaking wet Bachi from him and caressing her against her lovingly. “I’m so glad your okay…” She said, nuzzling Bachi. But then Hato noticed, Bachi had something in her mouth… She had the rest of the fish Hato didn’t eat. Hato laughed, stroking Bachi’s wet fur, and looking back up at Doon. “Do you and Lina Mayfleet need a place to stay?” She asked, putting Bachi on the ground. “Yeah,” He said back, looking back at her as she squeezed the water out of her sodden, wine-red hair. “Well you two hobo Emberites are in luck, because I have some rooms up for rent in my house, if you don’t mind animals.” She said, looking back down at Bachi. He shook his head, looking back at Lina who was doing what looked a little bit like dissecting a leaf. “Hey, Lina, you wanna stay at Hato’s house?” He asked her. “Nope, not at all!” Lina said, smiling back at Doon. “Well it’s settled then, Hato. You have new house-guests!”
