On August 6th, 1945, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in japan. Three days later, another was dropped on Nagasaki, another city in Japan.
“The use of the atomic bomb with its indiscriminate killing of women and children revolts my soul.” Herbert Hoover
“…the Japanese were ready to surrender…” Dwight D. Eisenhower
The bomb ended the war for the U.S. and showed the world how powerful the U.S. is. The bomb also was a major break through in technology.
An alternative was a full scale invasion, which would cost about 20,000 American lives or Japan would surrender.
Dwight D. Eisenhower thought it was useless because Japan was ready to surrender, but Truman thought that it was necessary, making sure the Second World War would end.
This subject fits the theme, “Conflict and compromise” because there were many debates about dropping it or not.
The effects were brutal: ratiation sickness, which involved vomiting, diarrhea and hair loss. pregnant womens' babies died or born with abnormalities. Growths called keliods spread across the body like spiderwebs. The radiation from the bomb altered the DNA, making the person loose an arm or someother disorder. some of those abnormalities are still out taking effect.
