Rose looked at Kris and said “It’s rude to stare.” “Sorry.” Kris looked away, feeling ashamed of him self. Rose chuckled then looked at her father in sadness. “How much longer will you stay dad? How much longer till you decide that place is no good for you?” “Sorry sweetheart.” Matt faced her, emptying the glass of water. “But I need that job.” “No you don’t dad. You just want it.” “Rose.” Matt said angrily. “I will not allow that kind of backtalk in this household!” “Yes sir.” Rose said as she looked down. Kris looked between the both of them and sat down. This was not his battle, nor his family, so he had no right to interfere. He wanted to so badly though. He knew Matt had treated her in anger but he also knew that he feared for her. Rose, knowing this conversation was over as soon as he had lashed out in anger, walked out of the room. Matt growled in frustration and walked into the living room. Kris followed, obeying the man’s wishes to not go near his daughter. Matt looked at Kris before looking up at the ceiling. “Still following me kid?” “I am obeying one of your wishes.” Kris reminded him. “Screw that. If you are supposed to be watching my daughter, then watch her. Quit watching me.” Kris sighed as he sat in the chair across from Matt. “Look, I know I have no right to say this, but it won’t leave me alone. Why did you treat her like that?” “Her mother…well…her mother was a whore…and didn’t give her much. I won the right to raise her…much to her mother’s dissatisfaction.” “Won the-“ “Court.” Matt sighed. “A long, long process.” “So…what happened to her? The mother I mean.” “Well…she committed suicide the next day. When she had found out that she had lost the case.” “Oh no…why did she do that?” Kris was mortified, yet curious all the same. “Nobody knows. But I think she did it because she lost the case and couldn’t raise Rose to be a moneymaker.” “So…you think she would have raised Rose to be exactly like her?” “Not think, I know.” Matt stood up and started pacing. “Kristina was always a bit odd in the head…She said I couldn’t see the big picture.” Matt chuckled. “This was back when I had longer hair and wasn’t very high up in the business.” “So you became what you are today, and put Rose into the place she is now.” Kris said as he watched him pace back and forth across the carpet. “Pretty much. I would leave that place and find a new job, but I don’t want to put her in the same place as her mother.” Kris sighed and stood up. “Ever think of asking Rose if that is what she would want?” Matt looked at Kris in shock. “I don’t want my daughter to face that kind of stress, you hear me?” “I hear you loud and clear Matt. But I can tell she isn’t happy.” “She isn’t happy because of that job, I know. So if you are about to tell me that I am the one who’s making her unhappy, go shove your self-righteous knowledge somewhere else.”
