Keeping my life as long as possible
I walked down the street of hell to my death bed. Demons looked at me. I didn’t belong here. Everyone knew that. A smile spread across my face. Who was I? What was I doing here? I lay down on the hard rock of a bed. Silently I rose to hover above the creatures. Then I dropped into darkness.
Seconds later I woke up in my bed in a pool of sweat. “Ugghh,” I grunted to myself. I got out of bed and went to the bathroom to put my shirt in the dirty laundry basket. As I was walking out my sister went straight into me, colliding into my bare chest.
“Ow! You retard! Watch where you’re going!” She yelled. I only laughed.
“What are you laughing about a** hole?” She yelled.
“I don’t know,” I said, “you were the one who rammed into me.”
“What do you know? God! Go back to sleep!”
“Fine! I will!” I yelled back.
“I just noticed you are drenched in sweat! EEWWW! You are a retard, it was better when you were sick!”
That ticked me off!
“Shut up! You wouldn’t have any clue how much pain I was in!” I yelled.
My parents came rushing out of their bedroom after a few seconds.
“What is it Lacey? Why are you guys yelling at each other?” My mother asked.
“Michael ran into me,” my sister said.
“Did not!” I protested. “I was walking out of my bedroom and she ran into me!”
“Yeah right you no good b*****d!” Lacey shrieked.
“That’s enough!” my father yelled. “You two back to bed!” After he said that Lacey ran back into her room and slammed the door. I didn’t move.
“Honey! You can’t set your sister off like that! You know she can’t hold a temper!” My mother said as kindly as possible. “Bill go back to bed I’ll give Michael his medicine.” My father obeyed and closed his bedroom door behind him.
A few minutes later my mother had the medicine out and was getting ready to inject it. I looked at her unhappy. She felt my temperature and bounced.
“You’re burning sweetie!” She grabbed a washcloth and dabbed my forehead. After a few minutes she was back to my medicine.
“She took the syringe in her hand and put it slowly in my arm and injected the medicine. Pain shot through me like every time this crap went in me. I held back a scream. Then it was done.
“Off to bed,” my mother said. “No more getting out of bed or I’ll give you something to keep you sleeping till three in the afternoon.” I got up and went off to bed barely keeping my body up because I was always so weak after all the shots.
When I woke up in the morning on a gorgeous summer day I looked at my clock and it only read 6:30.
“Damn!” I thought. Once again I got out of bed and felt my shoulder. Burning like hell. I walked down stairs only to see my retard doctor, Dr. John. He was talking to my mother in the kitchen as I passed.
“Hello Michael!” He said cheerfully as if he’d been awake for hours.
“Hi,” I replied sleepily.
“How are you feeling after a rough night of a fever and all?” he asked.
“Fine,” I replied. I always hated when he asked questions. I left the kitchen and went into the den to watch cartoons with my younger sister Alexis. I could hear footsteps of my older sister Lacey coming down the stairs. Even though she was only 11 months older than I, she was still a b***h. I walked back into the kitchen to eat something. Normally I would only have a banana for breakfast but for the next eight weeks I had to eat heavy. I have always been very skinny and with all these medicines its making my immune system deteriorate. I took down an English muffin and some butter and popped it into the toaster.
Lacey was already down stairs and looking sleepy.
“Hey Dr. John what’s up?” she asked.
“Hello Lacey,” he said, “how was your night?”
“Great! Except that my dumb brother had to run into me!” she replied angrily.
“That’s not good. Why did he run into you?” Dr. John asked.
“I don’t know he was out of bed too.” She said.
“Oh ok well your mother and I are going over the medication you brother takes. We think he might need more.” I almost fainted when I heard that.
“Oh sure doctor he does need more, definitely. He seems to be not feeling well lately.” She replied as if she really did love me.
“Well it’s good to hear you really care about him,” Dr. John said smiling. I was so mad right now I almost felt I should throw a knife at Lacey right then. I went outside and got some fresh air instead.
I went out back and sat in out hammock thinking about taking more medication. I already had to take 10 shots a day. Three at night and the rest in the day time. More added on would really piss me off. When I first got sick they had to strap me down so I wouldn’t move while getting my medicine. Now I took it with no problem except for the one I had to take at four. This one was a weird green liquid thing and it was injected well in lets just say my behind. Hurts like hell. So my mother has a stretcher in the garage and she straps me to it while she gives me that one. You would think I would get used to it after 6 years, but no still hurts and still freaks me out and still makes me squirm.
When I went back into the house the doctor looked like he was going to leave.
“Oh good you came back in,” he said, “I was just about to come out and give you your four o’clock shot.”
“Great!” I said. “But I’d much rather have my mom do it. She’s much better at it” I said as politely as ever.
“No Michael you are going to get it from the doctor.” My mother said, “It’s a new medicine I don’t want to inject it wrong.”
“s**t,” I mumbled to myself.
“Let’s head upstairs!” Dr. John said.
I jogged up the stairs to the bathroom.
“Not in there,” Dr. John said.
“Why not? That’s the only place I get them besides the garage.” I replied.
“Because this one is special.” He said, “Very special.” When he guided me to my room I panicked. What kind of medicine is this! I had no clue. And in we went.
“Lay down,” the doctor said, “and I’m going to need you to undress.” I did what he said. I was somewhat glad I had a guy doctor but he could be a lesbian so you know, you never know. When I finished he told me to roll over on my stomach. I did so feeling a bit awkward because I didn’t know what was happening. Seconds later I felt a burning pain in my butt. Pain like pain when 8 gazillion bees come sting you. I screamed. Wiggled and sat up pulling my boxers and pants back on. Dr. J was speechless.
“Uh looks like we might have to put you to sleep for this one.” He pulled out a needle and motions for me to undress again then injected it into my arm. Lights out.
After about a few hours I woke up. 6:30 p.m. my clock read. Just in time for dinner! I got up and rushed out of the room. Well at least attempted to rush out. Then I noticed I was stuck on something. I followed the cord from my arm to an IV drip.
“Damn!” I thought. Hospital in my own home!? Then I looked real close and noticed the IV was out of liquid. I ripped the IV out of my arm and ran downstairs. My whole family, father, mother, and two sisters were setting the table. When my mother saw me she yelled
“NO! Back to your room!”
“Why?” I asked, “I’m so freakin hungry!”
“Doctor’s orders! I will bring you your food. Wait how did you get the IV off?”
“Mom I know my stuff! You can just rip them off…” I said with a smile.
“Go now!” my mother yelled.
I left and heard footsteps a minute later coming to my room. My mother opened the door in outrage, hung another IV up and put the needle back into me. Damn! I was stuck.
I reached out for my PSP and it wasn’t there! Lacey took it! I ripped the IV off again and ran down stairs yelling at Lacey.
“Where the hell did you put my PSP?!” I yelled.
“I don’t have it! Mom took it! She thinks you need more sleep. ‘No more video games’ she said. I just laughed ha ha!”
“b***h!” I yelled. My mother then came at me with 3 shots. Putting them one at a time in probably missed them after the time I was sleeping. All the pain was so intense I fainted right on my tiled kitchen floor.
Apparently someone carried my upstairs because I was in my bed when I woke up. This time it was my four o’ clock shot again! This time I was strapped to my own bed with metal cuffs and my mother was injecting it. I screamed again, so loud the neighbors probably heard it. Then, blackout again.
I woke up at 10 a.m. six hours after my four o’clock shot. I got up making sure there was no IV attached to me and went down stairs.
“Good morning Michael,” my father said.
“Morning” I replied.
“Feeling better?” he asked.
“Sure,” I replied. Even though I didn’t feel any better than I ever have.
“Where’s mom?” I asked when I noticed I couldn’t find her or Lacey but I didn’t really care about Lacey.
‘With Lacey at her school volunteering.” My dad replied.
“It’s summer dad.” I said with disbelief.
“I know they are helping teachers pull down their classrooms.” I nodded my head.
“Cool.” I walked over to the fridge and pulled out a crème-filled Popsicle.
“I am so hungry!” I murmured to myself.
“I’m gonna take a walk o.k. dad?” I asked
“Sure,” my dad said, “be home by one that’s our lunch time.” I already knew that but apparently he thought I lost memory or something. I went outside and started walking. I needed to think. Why was the doctor giving more medicine? Why did this medication hurt so much? I’m only thirteen. Shouldn’t kid’s medicine hurt less? Why do I always faint when I get more than one shot? Why don’t I know the names of the medication they are giving me? Questions buzzed through my head. Then this b*****d, Tommy Franks, zoomed by on his skateboard.
“Hi looser! How you doing? Feeling better? I hope you get well soon.” He snickered. I didn’t even look. “I can’t wait till you come back to school so I can bully you again! It would be a miracle if you lived to go back to school.” Then, I got mad.
“You better shut you ******** mouth!” I said to his face
“What are you gonna do about it? Inject me with a shot? One I don’t know the name of? Ah I’m so scared!” I was so fired up I kicked him right in the nuts, hard.
“s**t!” he yelled, “call a doctor, no animal control; get a tranquilizer this kid is insane!”
All I did was walk away. Happy, that I could now hurt someone really bad.
When I got back home Lacey and my mom were both home. My mom took one look at me and said,
“What are you covering up?”
“Nothing,” I mumbled.
“That’s not true, I can always tell if you’re upset.” She answered.
“Mom, I’m fine. I just took a walk.” I replied.
“Sure you did. And on that walk what did you do?”
“Nothing, all I did was walk.”
“Fine! If I’m not going to get anything out of you then you can have another IV being that you should have three a day but there can be acceptations.”
“Fine, I’ll tell you, god, and ok I ran into Tommy and he pissed me off and I kicked him in the nuts. Happy?”
“Wow, ok, thanks, Michael now go to your room I got you something.” I ran off into my room and found my PSP with a new Halo game. I plopped on my bed and ate a pop tart. Then I realized I had a freakin doctor’s appointment tomorrow! Damn it! Freakin doctor… Well I’d rather keep my mind on something else for now.
Morning came to fast and my mother and I were in our Town and Country van.
