Locked in the bathroom
The shower water runs
Blazing hot
It hits my back
Like the flames of a fire

You say it’s not my fault

I carelessly run my razor along my leg
Leaving behind little scratches
Blood drops off my knee
Staining the white bathtub

But you still punish me

I drop the soap
But I don’t notice
My eyes are filled with tears
But the rushing water
Drowns out the sound of my sobs

You say you don’t mean to hurt me

Bringing the soapy cloth
Up to my eyes
I wipe away the running mascara
Only to have my eyes burn
From the soap

But my heart breaks

My breaths become short
My head spins
I step on the soap and fall
As water fills my mouth
I cough and sputter

You say I’m your friend

I think about staying there
Face down in the water
Maybe my breathing will go lighter
Then stop altogether
Bringing my heart to a halt

But your words stop coming to me

I get up
And wrap a towel
Around my naked body
Turning off the water
Turns off our friendship
