How I Finally Got Married
Her hair has grown so long, and the ends have been dyed blond by the sun. I’m so tempted to just reach out and touch it, move it away from her face. No, I shouldn’t; I can’t. It would be too inappropriate, for this type of setting. I want to lean over and kiss her and have her be mine forever and forever.
“Miss Bradley? Are you with us?” I look at the camera man and nod. “Good because we’re on in 5, 4…” Then he holds up three fingers moving to two and then only one. Almost instantly after his last finger is down, the red lights turn on, telling us that the show is now being recorded.
“Before we went on break, I was asking Lily and her fiancé, Angel, about their new manga book,” Nessie Langdon turns to look at us. She smiles at me to give me reassurance and to keep my nerves from boiling over. “Where did you get your inspiration from?” Angel, as usual, stiffens at the question and turns to me. Her eyes are begging me to answer. I grab her hand and squeeze it. Anyway, I’ve been here on this stage before. I’ve been interviewed many times before by Nessie. When I was younger I dreamed of becoming a professional author and being on Ms. Langdon’s show. She was such an inspiration to me. I’m one of the few people who are lucky enough for my dream to actually come true.
I yawn dramatically. “Well, Nessie, I find inspiration rather boring,” I say. The audience laughs.
“Is that so? Well then, let’s talk about what you two are working on right now,” she replies.
“That’s more boring!” I cry in an annoying voice. Nessie doesn’t even crack a smile. You can tell that beside her talk show and modeling, she is also an actress. Angel on the other hand, loosens up and giggles some. The audience is roaring with laughter.
“Well then Ms. Bradley, what would you like to talk about?” she asks. I turn my head and smile at Angel.
“Her,” is my one-word reply.
“What about Angel would you like to talk about? Does she have any dirty secrets you want to share?” I hold up Angel’s hand.
“Do you see this ring? I gave it to her when we were fourteen. It’s magic that is still fits. And then there is this ring over here. I gave that to her when we were twenty; it’s an engagement ring. Do you see what’s wrong with that picture?” I ask.
“No…” she replies.
“Well, we’re now twenty-four. I’ve been out of college for a year now, we have a fantastic house, we’re both very successful and let’s not forget famous, but we still haven’t got married. And you know why? Because the law won’t let us! That is until yesterday. Finally, finally, a law was passed saying that same-sex marriages are allowed in any state.” I stand up and get down on my knee in front of Angel. I take her hand in mine. “Angel, I’ve been waiting for 11 years to this very day to marry you, and I can’t wait any longer.” Behind us, the stage crew people are bringing in wedding props and setting them up behind the couch. Nessie sneaks over to where the podium is standing and slips on a pastor’s robe. I try my hardest not to giggle at the sight. Angel’s eyes are still locked on mine. One of the stage crew men brings a wedding dress up behind Angels back, and I take it from him.
“Now I want you to go take this back stage and change into it, and when you’re done come out here.” I hand her the dress and she obeys with a huge grin plastered onto her face. I pick up my tux jacket which I discarded at the beginning of the interview complaining it was too hot and slip it on. I go to where Nessie is, and I ask her how I look.
“Like a prince, awaiting nervously for her one true love to walk down the aisle and say the two words that she’s been waiting so long to hear, ‘I do’.” I smile and straighten my bow tie. In front of me, a huge red rug is rolled out, reminding me of the red carpet. My four-year-old niece, Anna, comes out from behind the stage dressed in a white and pink ruffled dress holding a little pink basket full of flower petals. She stands at the beginning of the carpet. The next to “arrive” is Angel’s father and then her nephew wearing his own little tux with a tiny satin pillow. Two rings shine under the stage lights. I begin to sweat and become anxious.
At last my princess emerges from behind the stage, and her face lights up. She walks to the end of the aisle behind the flower girl with her father. Anna walks down the aisle throwing petals as she walks. When, Angel and her father begin to walk toward me, my heart races. This is finally the moment I’ve been waiting for! It takes her about a million years to get to the end of the aisle, but finally she’s standing by me, and her dad kisses her cheek then lets her go. I smile at her; she smiles back.
Nessie begins, “Lily and Angel, to tell you the truth, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to say.” The audience laughs. She continues, “But I know this part, do you promise to love each other forever and always, through sickness and health, through the hard times and the bad, through wealth and poor. To sum it all up, will you love one another no matter what?” We both are too happy to say actual words so we just nod. “Well then, do you Lily Bradley take Angel Carlson to be your wife?”
“I do,” I say”
“And you, Angel Carlson, do you take Lily…”
“I do!” she exclaims before the question is even asked. She grabs me by the back of the neck and pulls me into her. Her mouth meets mine.
“You may kiss the bride, or um… the bride may kiss you!” Nessie says.
The kiss seems like it can last forever, and I want it to, but soon it comes to an end, and she smiles at me. The stage crew is already beginning to take the props off the stage, and they begin bringing food on. The band begins playing a slow song. Nessie looks out into the crowd as long tables with white tablecloths are wheeled in.
“Now, I would like to invite all of you to come down here and celebrate with us!” The audience seems to hesitate a bit not sure if she means it, but eventually a dark skinned overweight woman comes running down the steps at the sight of the cake, and that brings everybody else down.
After all the “guests” are seated on lawn chairs by the tables with food in front of them, Nessie stands up once again and taps her wine glass. The chatter dies down and all turn to look at her.
“I’d first like to start off with thanking all of you for coming to this wedding. I’d like to explain how it all happened. I got a frantic call from Lily saying that she really needs to do something extremely special for her Angel. We knew each other before because I interviewed her when her book, A Star in the Sky, came out. Anyway, so I got that phone call, and she told me that she wanted to marry her on my talk show. Of course I jumped at the idea. It seemed really fun. She said she was going to send a check in the mail to pay for it, but that just wouldn’t do either. After I told some of my friends who told her fans, about the wedding, I got money flying in left to right. I’m surprised it didn’t get to Angel. To make this really long story short, this wedding couldn’t have been done without all her fans. And also that the way Lily looks at Angel, I can tell that this marriage is going to work out perfectly. It’s a shame they had to wait longer than they wanted to.”
I turn and smile at Angel. “It was well worth the wait.”
