When the character, reader-insert or whatever has a conversation with themselves in their mind. It annoys me greatly. Before I was fine with it but I'm starting to find them in a lot in what I read and it's ridiculous. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it seems so out of place when a serious character (just picture Itachi from Naruto doing that...it's so out of character for him or any other serious character) suddenly has a little voice in his head, talking about how he has a crush on a girl and is in denied. It's not just once that the voice (who seems to have it's own personality) pops up randomly, making comments to hopefully "encourage" him to pursuit his feelings, but several times. Oh, and I just find it weird when two main characters (mostly the pairings in a fic) have their own voices in their head doing just that. You know, like the male character has a voice encouraging him to be nicer or something while the female's character voice is encouraging her to admit she likes the guy. Yeah, and it's more weird when these voices are know-it-alls and seem to be their own character inside the main characters. I think if someone is going to go out of their way to make a voice with personality and always be there making comments than they should just make it another character. Maybe make them an imaginary one or actually make an original character. I just think that voices inside the characters head as a "voice of reason" or "subconscious" is unneeded. I would understand it being a part of the plot...like the character is actually insane or there's another person stuck in there or a psychology problem like facing a traumatic event in which the voice was developed. But if there's no purpose for the voice other than for our "subconscious self" trying to get us to admit something and making comments for every little thing is unnecessary. In doing that it is exactly like the author themselves interrupting the story to make comments. I don't think anyone likes that either when they get into the story and suddenly they're throw off and lost the mood when the author interrupts with a comment about 'how cute he's being because he's shy' or something else. Which is why there's footnotes but that's another topic I don't want to get into. Anyway, that's pretty much my rant.
