At 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Saturday 26th March 2011, lights will switch off around the globe for Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a global movement encouraging individuals, businesses and governments around the world to take positive actions for the environment by turning their lights off for one designated hour. It's such a great movement that even the world's most iconic landmarks, cities, countries, territories, etc. went dark for one hour. Last year 4616 cities, towns and municipalities took part in Earth Hour 2010 across 128 countries, including 89 national capitals and 9 of the world’s 10 most populated cities. They included New York, Beijing, Los Angeles, Nairobi, Hong Kong, London, Moscow, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, Paris, Rome, Singapore, Mexico City, Dubai and many more of the world’s biggest cities took part of the global action. And 1551 landmarks also went dark including some of the world’s most iconic: Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza, Bird’s Nest (Olympic Stadium) in Beijing, Eiffel Tower in Paris, The Las Vegas Strip, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, The Acropolis in Athens, The Coliseum in Rome, Rio de Janeiro, Empire State Building and Table Mountain in Cape Town. It's a way to save energy and allows us to protect the one thing that unites us all – the planet. How does it help the Earth? Simple. The point of Earth Hour is to show the world that a solution to the world's environmental challenges is possible if we work on them together and that together our actions all add up. So please join this movement by switching your lights off for Earth Hour. You do that by turning off non-essential lighting. It's doesn't mean you have of turn off your refrigerator, but turn off the things that you don't need on and aren't using, such as microwaves, toaster ovens, radio, etc. Just be sure to not turn off safety and security lighting though. It's encourage that you to be part of this global action by switching off your lights, as well as making a commitment to go beyond the hour with a long-term behavioral change. Such as recycling, eat healthy and organic foods from your local market, keep electrical items not in use unplugged, and so on.
