By now everyone has heard about the reboot, basically a “restart” of the video game Devil May Cry. It's being developed by Ninja Theory and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The new game is an origin story and from what I've been hearing they've changed a lot of things that made Dante, the original one – Dante. I personally thought the series was just fine the way it is and I would be all up for them remaking it with more backstory details and stuff. Instead of doing that they are doing a sort of spin-off with the video game and rewriting everything that was fact.
The first uproar the fans had with the game was the way the new Dante looked. Being that it was an origin story it's not surprising that he's younger and has different clothes, weapons, and a sadistic streak. But what many had a problem with is that he has primarily black hair with a barely noticeable tuft of white on top, red eyes, and a leaner, gaunter build as compared to the classic Dante.
There is also concerns about this version of Dante apparently having acquired a smoking habit, in contrast to the old Dante who its creator, Hideki Kamiya, deemed "too cool to smoke". The new 'Dante' in fact looked so different from the previous games that fans are still divided as to whether to consider this the real Dante or just another character who thinks he is Dante.
Another uproar is that in the reboot Dante is half demon and half angel unlike the original where he was half demon and half human. It was surprising that they changed that since Dante being half human plays an important role in the Devil May Cry story. Dante's humanity is what makes him stronger than full blooded demons. Even though demons have superior physical strength and magical abilities they lack something very important which is a “heart”. Humans have been known to surpass levels thought impossible when it comes to emotions and the people they care about. It is their will power, that allows them to succeed despite impossible odds. Demons can't reach that level because they honesty don't “care” nor do they wish to understand.
It is that same reason that Sparda was so powerful because he fell in love with a human, Eva that he was able to see and find those traits within himself that separate humans from demons. But the aspect of changing Dante to half angel instead of half human is interesting though. In the Devil May Cry series angels are said to be the same thing as demons. In the Devil May Cry 3 the Tokyopop manga, it is claimed that “the powerful demons were once angels”. In Devil May Cry 4, the Order wanted to turn it's members into “angels” which were actually a hybrid of half demons and half humans.
Whatever the angels are, it's apparent that they will play a roll in the reboot. It's unknown so far if the role is big or not but hopefully it turns out fine. There's still a lot of things we don't know about the new game (like if that Dante will have a twin brother) but it's obvious that it's not meant to be apart of the original Devil May Cry series but it's own series. The best way to compare it to is fan fiction, a well written Alternative Universe fan fiction that uses/takes characters, settings, and concepts of the original games and turns it into it's own version and so on.
I'll wait until the game comes out to pass judgment on it but for now I'll patiently wait for it. Plus I see it as a spin-off/ AU fan fiction and nothing related to Devil May Cry besides the familiar characters.
