I don't mind reading some OC stories because they are usually interesting (more so then the self-inserts)...at least the ones I find. But the others are annoying (some are Mary-Sues but not all are and if they aren't then they are... ) typical that it gets boring.
For example, why must the OC be related to one of the characters?! I've seen so many OC stories that have them related, they either be a daughter, cousin, sister, twin sister, aunt or something. Those stories bore me because there's so many and it gets perdictable at times. I skip them because of that.
Plus it feels like the authors are taking the easy way out by making the OC related (seen this happen a lot in Harry Potter fanfics and in a couple of Naruto fics). They do it because it means less work in getting the new character introduce by having the canon characters already know and like them. It also means they can just jump right into their plot which is nothing really but focus on them hooking up to someone while tagging along to the original plot of the fandom.
Speaking of basically following the canon plot...which is reapeating the book, movie, game or whatever fandom they are writing about. What bothers me about it, is that there is no Butterfly Effect. The concept is (and should be) the same when it comes to adding a new character that wasn't originally there.
If someone goes to the past and changes just one thing then the future would be effected by it. So adding the OC(s) changes the fandom and they change it even more because their actions, existences, and so on effect other characters, plot and stuff, even if they didn't mean too.
I remember watching a movie where humans created a time machine to travel to jurassic period and they tried to be careful as possible not to change anything. When they came back to present time Earth, something went wrong and it was undergoing changes. These time waves in the present time Earth were altering the present/future into a new present/future...one where humans didn't exist, where new creatures envolve and so on. All that trouble just because someone stepped on a butterfly in the dinosaur time period.
Ah, feels good to rant it out. I had that bottle in for a long while now.
