When video games were just starting out and growing in popularity, memory was expensive, and it made sense to limit the number of save points in the games. Technology at that time was only capable of containing very small file sizes for the save files and it made sense to set save points at parts of the game.
But nowadays, video games have grown so much and are capable of doing a lot of things. So to me I feel like there should be no excuse for video games to contain a designated ”save point”. It’s incredibly annoying to spend an hour into the game and not seeing a save point in sight. People DO have lives outside of video games and without the ability of saving whenever we want is disappointing.
But of course there are people out there who say that is a terrible idea. They want save points because it adds a bit more difficulty to the game. I agree that in some games like horror survival it’s an ideal method to use, but that should be an OPTION. If someone is playing on Easy then they should be given the chance to save whenever they want. If someone is playing on Normal then they should have save points that are decently set-apart in the game. If they are playing on Hard then cut down on the number of saves they can do, by allowing certain save points to be accessed.
Otherwise, allow dynamic saving and if not then give people that option. I’m sure game developers can think up a few ways to make that possible or how to make it work depending on the genre or level of difficulty. It would save gamers the hassle of starting levels over just because they couldn’t reach the next save point in time.
