Sometimes I feel like it should be a requirement to leave a review before a person can add a story to their favorites or story alerts. If a person loved the story enough to do that then it wouldn’t kill them to leave at least ONE review about it. It would show the author that you appreciate the effort they put into writing it and constantly updating it.
If the person doesn’t know what to say then just write about the parts that you’re enjoying the most. Your favorite scenes, least favorite scenes, predictions and whatnot. There has to be a reason why you’re favoriting in the first place. Don’t be afraid to let the author know in the review. If for some reason you can’t think of anything to say, then what about honesty?
You can tell the author that, ‘I’m loving your story so much that I will favorite it because it’s that good’. If you don’t have time to write a review then what about saying that in the review, ‘I hope you don’t mind waiting for another review. It’s late at night and I can’t think straight enough to write a proper review. Expect another review from me. Hopefully I won’t forget.’
Or if you’re one of those people who like to review a story when it’s completed then say so in a review. Let them know that you, ‘like the story a lot but I prefer leaving reviews when the story is completed. Doing that allows me to sum up the whole story in one long review’.
Authors love feedback because it lets them know what people are thinking about. Plus, it helps them know what they can do to improve or know what readers are enjoying the most about it. Putting a story into a favorites or story alert is nice and it is a type of feedback, but isn’t a very helpful one. It doesn’t help the author know WHY you like the story.
