Since when has Dante’s original design become “uncool”? After so many years I haven’t heard about anyone having a problem with it. Maybe there were one or two that didn’t like it but you don’t see a lot of topics about it, because it’s nonexistent. It was only till Capcom decided that the series needed a reboot that people starting saying that. More so when Capcom decided to give Dante a makeover because he’s old, unrealistic and “uncool” now.
Ninja Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades stated, ”If Dante, dressed as he was, walked into any bar outside of Tokyo, he’d get laughed out.”
That’s ridiculous if they think that way. That’s like saying if a person with tattoos covering their whole body would instantly get laughed at no matter where they go because it’s not normal. That someone with rainbow hair and wears leather all the time would be ridicule. All because it’s not something you see every day, that their strangeness wouldn’t be accepted.
It’s true that in some places it would be uncommon to see a person dressed in cyberpunk or any other style if they’re never seen or heard of it. But considering it’s a video game and it’s aimed at Westerners, it wouldn’t be THAT weird for us to see a main character look different from what is “normal”. Actually it would be a relief that he stands out, that he doesn’t conform to the current trends.
Dante with his red leather trench coat and silvery-white hair is unique. His original design is iconic. He’s easily identified from it. If Ninja Theory director’s logic is true then it why not make it applied to every video game that takes place in modern times?
Why not change Carmen Sandiego design? She’s incredibly suspicious wearing a red trench coat and matching wide-brimmed hat. Logically, it would make sense for her to disguised herself better by looking “normal” as possible. But what’s the fun in that? The way she was design is her trademark and if she was anything other than that, she would have become a forgettable character.
There are other examples I could use but point is, there’s nothing “uncool” about how Dante is. If a person likes DmC, the new Dante then kudos for them. But please don’t keep on hating on the original just because you like the new design. You can like BOTH of them, or prefer one over the other. There’s no unspoken rule that you have to hate on the original just because you like the new one.
I personally don’t care for DmC’s Dante but you do not see me hating on it. I do not mind the design because it seems fine now that they edited it a bit. I’m sure they have reasons for why he looks the way he does. After all, DmC: Devil May Cry is not DMC5. It doesn’t follow or have any connection with the original series besides using the established characters. It’s suppose to be the first of it’s own series (should it become successful). It takes place in an alternative universe where everything we known and love from the original series is different. He’s a different Dante, that’s why his design isn’t similar to the original.
