Recently Fanfiction.net has been deleting stories that contain yaoi, yuri, lemons, violence, stories based on songs, and any detailed sex scenes. With the purge of those kind of stories it’s putting everyone in an uproar about it. I’m having a difficult time in understanding why people are reacting that way.
In the TOS (Terms of Service) it states that YOUR REGISTRATION OBLIGATIONS is that you are “to abide by the rules that are posted for different sections such as but not only the chat rules and the posting rules; (b) uphold the locals laws as applicable to your actions when viewing and posting of content to the site; (c) honor the requests made by FanFiction.Net agents…”
They have rules that state what they don’t allow on the site, such as chapters containing only a author’s note, challenges, polls, and whatnot. They don’t allow CYOA, second person, no song fics, no real life fanfiction of celebrities/well known people, etc. Most of all they do not allow explicit content.
Through the years they didn’t enforce the rules as much because they trust that users would listen. But nope, now they are cracking down on those rule breakers. Some people are wondering why now? I tell you why, it’s because of the success of Fifty Shades of Grey. Because of the series, FF.net is cleaning up the site to not only look professional but to avoid lawsuit. They do not want to be known as a site that contains or has any erotic literature, especially when it has young users on it.
This news is from their front page: “Although Fiction Ratings goes up to Fiction MA, FanFiction.Net since 2002 has not allowed Fiction MA rated content which can contain adult/explicit content on the site. FanFiction.Net only accepts content in the Fiction K through Fiction M range. Fiction M can contain adult language, themes and suggestions. Detailed descriptions of physical interaction of sexual or violent nature is considered Fiction MA and has not been allowed on the site since 2002.”
Also, they aren’t homophobic. They allow shounen-ai and shoujo-ai. The terms yaoi (and yuri) and shōnen-ai (and shoujo-ai) are sometimes used by western fans to differentiate between the contents of the genre. In this case, yaoi and yuri is used to describe titles that contain largely sex scenes and other sexually explicit themes. While shōnen-ai and shoujo-ai is used to describe titles that focus more on romance and do not include explicit sexual content, although they may include implicit sexual content.
