While most games focus on the action, The Walking Dead game from Telltale set out from the start to make you emotional. So said Robert Kirkman, the creator and writer of The Walking Dead comics who, aside from stipulating the sad tone for the game, let Telltale take control of the story.
“Talking with the guys at Telltale, I said, The Walking Dead is sad. If you can make players sad, that’s really what we’re after here. You want to drive the emotional impact of what it would be like to live in this world, and if you can achieve that in a game, that would be amazing,’” said Kirkman.
“And that was something the Telltale team was already striving for - making this a really emotional experience, not just scary or exciting. Those were the kinds of decisions we made very early on. But the type of game it is, and the way the gameplay works, is all Telltale.”
From what I’ve experience so far, it’s a game filled with interesting characters and situations. Each thing that happens has you at the edge of your seat because you don’t know what will happen. Even if you think you know they manage to still catch you off guard. Another unique thing about the game is that your choices really do effect the story and the characters.
The game is a story and character driven, to the point where you become pulled in feeling like you’re really a part of it. There’s no escaping the feels you’ll get and you will get them. But most importantly, the game does an excellent job in keeping the theme of The Walking Dead comics, that despite the awful things its heroes must do to survive, the anguish they feel proves that they’re still human. Telltale’s game stays true to its source material: with every decision you make, you’ll feel a little bit worse.
