Fanfiction writers should research when it comes to writing their stories. There’s no excuse for not doing so when the internet and Wikipedia are at their fingertips. It’s doesn’t take days, nor hours to come across the information they need. That’s the power of search engines such as Google.
I bring this up because it’s just depressing to see the amount of stories out there that lack research. If a person is going to write about a character living in Japan for example, and the location of that character, and the nationality of the character is relevant to the story, then the author SHOULD do the research.
Why write a story about something that you’re not familiar with, if you know you’re not going to put any effort in researching? If you can’t find the time to research then why bother writing the story in the first place? You might as well take the easy road and stick with what you know. You should only move onto the bigger stories, the things that you’re unfamiliar with until your ready for the challenge and the extra work that comes with it.
Again, always research what you don’t know. The readers aren’t stupid. They can tell when writers didn’t do their homework. For example, a writer uses Japanese words and phrases in their story when the setting is in Korea and characters are Korean. That lack of research in any story story is cringe worthy and it’ll be no surprise that stories like that will not get any reviews.
Research what you’re writing about and what you don’t know, is just one of the steps to becoming a better writer.
