I finally got around to watching it and I’m very disappointed. It focuses too much on the competition of cosplay and the “drama” of it, which is obviously made up. This show had the potential to be great.
I was hoping that they focused more on the craft. How the cosplayers make their costumes, the materials they used, how they look for the best deals to save money, how they balance their passion for cosplaying with their life - with school, work, family and friends, etc. Basically, I was hoping it was like Face Off but less on competition and more on cosplaying. It would be more enjoyable to see the making of the costumes, to see them come to life. To see the cosplayers' skills, their tips and tricks that they’re learn from doing this hobby. That would have made the show amazing because watching that would be inspiring for people!
Cosplaying already has a fandom and if this show wanted to get their loyalty, they should have listen to their worries. Like I said before, this show had the potential to be very good. So many people would be interested in learning how those cosplayers are successful in their cosplay and how they’re making a career out of it.
Nearly everyone knows that cosplaying is an expensive hobby. It requires money, time and skills. That’s just for making the costumes alone, you will also need money to go to conventions — for the hotel rooms, for food, for transportation, etc. There’s no need to make drama up when it’s already there; it’s a struggle to do something you love.
It’s so obviously that those behind the idea of the show don’t actually understand cosplaying at all. It makes me want to pull my hair out with the way they’re portraying the cosplay world. It’s ridiculous. They should have higher an experienced cosplayer to be an consultant. They would have educated and guide the producers on what’s right and wrong. But I doubt that they would have listen if they did. They only seem to want drama which is a running theme with “reality shows”.
