Am I the only one that was a bit disappointed in how they handle Kairi in KH3?
That was a rhetorical question. They’ve been sidelining her for so long and promising that she would be useful. It would’ve been awesome to see her going from damsel in distress trope to warrior heroine. Did you know that unlike the game she actually got herself and Pluto out on her own in the manga? She didn’t just sit around waiting for Sora to come rescue her. She did it herself with a bit of improvisation and near-perfect trickery of the Dusks that Demyx left to guard her.
She was spunky and showed a lot of potential in the manga. That was why I was excepting to see her have a bigger role in the game. Maybe I was foolish to be that optimistic, but what else was I suppose to think? They kept building it up and making promises that she’ll be more then just a love interest and plot device. I was so excited to hear that she had been training with Axel/Lea to become a badass Keyblade wielder. But I kept waiting and waiting for her to show up unexpectedly in one of Sora’s missions or to team up with him.
However, it doesn’t happened because most of the game Kairi spent it training until the final battle. We NEVER get to see her in action either. It’s always implied or it happens off screen and I don’t like to be TOLD about it. I wanna SEE it. Sure, she does saved Sora (but again, we don’t see how she did it either). And in the end, she still got kidnapped. The worst part was that Xehanort fridged her, to make Sora mad enough to fight him. He even said, “You require motivation.”
REALLY?!
After all this time I thought things would be different. It was completely unnecessary. Even if some other character replaced Kairi it still wasn’t needed. There are other ways to motivate a character, but whatever. Also, what was with that ending?! It was great that Sora rescued Kairi from ultimate death (just as she did for him), but that all happened off screen too. I’m guessing they’re planning to leave that for the next game or a DLC, maybe even a manga to show how that happened.
But why was she left behind on the island AGAIN while Riku went off to bring Sora back? What was the point of her doing all that training?! Or the point of her insisting throughout the whole game that “It's my turn to protect you, Sora!”
