Movie Review -- Lost Boys: The Tribe & Lost Boys: The Thirst |

Lost Boys: The Tribe is a 2008 horror comedy film directed by P. J. Pesce, which serves as a stand-alone sequel to the 1987 film, The Lost Boys.
After the death of their parents, ex-surfer pro Chris Emerson and his younger sister Nicole move to the quiet coastal town of Luna Bay, California, to live in a house owned by their aunt Jillian. On their first night, they go to a party thrown by another ex-surfer pro, Shane Powers and his “tribe”. Nicole is quickly seduced by the charismatic leader and the siblings soon learned that vampires really do exist.
This film doesn’t capture the uniqueness of The Lost Boys and honesty, most sequels rarely do. It’s basically a poorly done rehash of the first film with a few things switched around to try and make it a little different. I really don’t care for it. I don’t care about the characters. I was bored and it kept dragging or spending too much time on unnecessary things (like nudity and dumb gore for the sake of it, but I suppose they did that to make up for the fact that it’s terrible).
Just stick with the first film because it actually has a good story and good acting. In that movie they put in effort into making it good, fun and enjoyable. That’s why it’s such a classic. At least I can say that I give this one a try.
Oh, I did a bit of research and I learned that the Director of the original film Joel Schumacher had wanted to do a sequel called The Lost Girls, but the studio wasn’t interested at all. In an 2007 Rotten Tomatoes interview he said, “I told them to do ‘Lost Girls’ and not do ‘Lost Boys Sequel.’ There is no ‘Lost Boys’ sequel. All the boys are dead. The Coreys are too old. So what would be the movie? You’d have to make up a whole new set of characters. I told them to do ‘Lost Girls.’ It’d be great. I said, ‘Do gorgeous teenage biker chicks who are vampires. It’ll be great.’ But they don’t listen to me.”
A couple of years after that Hans Rodionoff originally wrote a script about surfing werewolves titled The Tribe which was turned down by studios including Warner Bros for its resemblance to The Lost Boys. Warner Bros studio executives changed their mind when they decided on a sequel, who then persuaded Rodionoff to alter the script for it, such as changing the werewolves to vampires.
Well, now that I know this I can see why the Lost Boys: The Tribe felt so flat and forced. The idea of The Lost Girls sounded way better to me. It would’ve been interesting to see a film about a group of female vampires, possibly from their perspective? What if one of them was tired of it? Tired of “Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die”?
So, what if the group/leader wants another ‘sister’ to join them, but that one is against it because the new girl doesn’t know what she’s really getting into. Maybe that naive girl reminds the vampire girl of herself when she was human? If not, maybe an actual sister she once had? Or of a lover? I don’t know, but this would’ve been so cool to watch if they went in this direction with a sequel. But of course, most studios don’t want to risk doing something that different and so they use the same formula. Or they make something so completely unrelated to the original film that the only thing connecting them is the popular franchise’s name slapped on to it. They know fans of the original film will still be drawn to it.
I wasn’t going to watch the third film, the Lost Boys: The Thirst because I expected it to be just as worst. But I put aside any misgivings I had about it and gave it a chance. It actually turned out to be pretty decent. It certainly was a step up from the Lost Boys: The Tribe. Now that I think about, pretend that film doesn’t exist and call this one the sequel instead.
It fits a whole lot better into the first film because it follows the Frog brothers (in particular Edgar) ongoing battle to eradicate vampires from the world.

In San Cazador, California, the vampire hunter Edgar Frog is facing eviction from his trailer. But a stunning and best-seller vampire novelist writer Gwen Lieber approaches him with an offer. She needs his help to find her brother who has gone missing after getting sucked into a series of underground raves, called The Gathering. It’s held by an enigmatic spinner named DJ Dusk. She suspects him to be the head vampire and he’s using his parties to raise an undead army.
