...Cause I'm about to start whining.
Some of you astute people may have noticed I haven't been around much recently. Just thought I'd stick my head in and let those of you who I haven't managed to contact otherwise know where I've been.
A few days before Christmas, my computer started acting very strange. Turns out I'd somehow picked up part of a virus, and therefore couldn't remove it. I'd been meaning to reformat for a while anyways, so I figured why the heck not, right?
That's when things turned ugly. I guess the stress was too much for my poor old clunker of a machine, because she outright DIED while I was trying to install Win2K (me no like XP). First she stopped detecting my secondary hard drive, then the primary, then she was reading my DVD as the primary master, and then she just stopped booting up altogether. The motherboard is now toast, and refuses to do -anything-.
I bought new parts (which took a bloody long time to arrive as the lovely people at AMD and ASUS decided to take extra-long holiday breaks).
At this point, I'm contentededly waiting for a phonecall from Scott, the dude at my parts store, when I decide to go grocery shopping, smell some detergent to see if I like it, and proceed to go into massive allergic shock. I got to ride in an ambulance while vomiting and being unable to breathe. That was fun (and messy). After a few hours at the hospital being plugged into all sorts of tubes and funny beeping machines, and having an IV of antihistamine, they decided I was okay to go home. Whee.
Two days later, my parts arrived, and I built an entirely new core for my machine (saved money by using the old miscellaneous cards, but the RAM, CPU, and mobo are all new) and installed XP (yech) because it was convenient. Apparently, though, Creative Soundblaster Live! 5.1 drivers are not compatible with XP, because as soon as the install was done, she crashed, and refused to load windows past the blue start screen, even in Safe Mode. Yeargh.
I had Nathan's spare hard drive here, which had a full install of 2K Pro on it, and we tested all my drivers on it, they seemed to work fine. So tomorrow he's going to install it like I'd originally intended, and HOPEFULLY will have a functional machine in the near future.
And in case you were curious, I'm using my parents' machine right now. It works, but it's slow, the resolution's awful (8*6) and there's nothing except MSN on it.
Oh yeah, and Christmas was good except for my grandmother (who always gets on my nerves). Got some cool games, watercolour pencils, nice pjs, books, some other stuff, and cash (which went to buy parts).
Happy ******** New Year.
