I stood there, in the cold, in the dark, thinking, Why? Why do I have to be here, now, just when everything was going wrong?
And, slowly, my eyes opened to see the crystal droplets fall before me. I sighed and took the first step, the step I had been dreading for a while now.
"Hello?" I called out into the mist. "Carter?"
The wind swirled past me, undisturbed as I continued into the dark cemetery. A pale white figure emerged from the left. It glided elegantly toward me, and I was frozen in place. Soon enough the figure came close enough to see its features. I let out the breath that I hadn't realized I was holding.
"Carter, you scared me to death," I sighed. He laughed shortly, but I didn't quite find it funny.
"I'm sorry, Jack," he said in a musical voice as he pushed the hair away from my face and, well, vanished. "Come on Jack, we have to feed," he called from the edge of my view in the opposite direction. The very thought of the blood sent an aching jolt to my fangs, and I licked then subconsciously.
Suddenly, the wind whipped against my face, numbing my cheeks. I knew what was coming next, death.
