I am inspired by nature when we humans, as a group work together to fix a destroyed ecosystem. You may be thinking, why? The picture that you see was taken at Rio Salado Restoration Habitat Area. What is that? Well, it used to be a river flowing freely, full of life of all kinds. One day the people of Arizona dammed it. It was then completely lifeless. All plant life died, so all animals and insects had to leave. It was emptied within months.
The students of ASU decided to change that. They looked at it from all directions to find a way to fix it. They made a small ‘pool’ and filled it, along with the dry river, up. They put algae eating fish in the water. All the other fish got there on their own.
Now you can see all sorts of wildlife there. According Pheonix.gov bird watchers have spotted over 200 different species of birds at Rio Salado. They have a secret waterfall. The workers there don’t clean up the ecosystem. They like to make the growing ecosystem to its natural thing… eat or be eaten. They are a butterfly ‘hotel’. The butterflies normally stop there on their way back to Canada. They even have a beaver! All the animals got there on their own. Rio Salado Restoration Habitat Area is an amazing and interesting place to visit.
