When Isabella walked into her third period class, she almost paused completely. There in the front row surrounded by people, sat Marissa. Just snickering as everyone laughed at something she had said. They all turned to look at Isa as she walked down the aisle, sitting down without looking over there. Right now she felt like everything she did was critized by them. She just sat there staring down at her desk, waiting for the class to start, for everyone to forget her, and pay attention to the teacher. After a moment, the teacher walked in, laying a piece of paper on everyone’s desk. One of those, ‘let’s get to know each other’ papers.
That may have been the one thing that caused Isabella to try to ignore the whispers and stares. Sticks and Stones...may break my bones.. She thought, really trying to tune everything out. Stones... Her wet curls shook out, as she shook her head gently. She finally finished, having taken as long as she could to finish it. Not wanting anyone to really know her, and wanting to take up most of the class period. However, she was finished, and with a couple minutes left. She stood up her hands shook gently as she grabbed the piece of paper, walking over to the teacher.
A foot popped out of the aisle, sending Isa falling to the ground. She felt herself turn red, and as she tried to stand. “Ha, looks like the beaner’s lost her ability to walk.” Isabella heard a boy say laughing cruely , it was the same one that had tripped her. She got to her feet, and opened her mouth just about to say something when he spoke once more. “Aw, come on now. Don’t tell me you forgot english, damn I think we might just have to call the police. Hopefully they’ll ship this w*****k back from where she came, I mean after all look her hair is still wet from the river.” Isabella felt the hot tears begin to sting her eyes, but the bell rang. With that she grabbed her stuff and slammed the paper on the teacher’s desk. Ignoring the faint taunting of her classmates. The tears she fought back, she’d save them for another time. To many tears would be wasted on the painful hurt brought back from all the terrible memories.
“Hey girlie, what you doing...?” Christina asked, as she threw her bag over her shoulder. She’d just gotten in, and was making no effort to hide it. Isabella just shook her head, and ignored her. Like she even cares, she doesn’t care about anything... No, that’s not my problem right now. I have more important things to think of. Isabella threw her books into her locker, and slammed it shut. Looking up in time to see Eric giving her a concerned look. “What’s wrong?” He asked as she put away his books, and shutting it gently. “Nothing, let’s just go to lunch.” Isa said shaking her head, she wasn’t sure if she could take anymore of this.
Eric just nodded, and began to walk slowly until Isa caught up with him. “Tell me what’s wrong.” He said as he stood at the end of the line with her, just smiling faintly and waving at people that would look at him weird. Isabella took a deep breath and forced herself to smile, ignoring the people that would snicker, as they passed them. They stood in silence for the next few moments, taking a total 15 minutes to get there food. Eric still wasn’t satisfied with ‘nothing’. “Alright, your going to tell me when we get to a table. Here, let me go find us an empty one.” Isabella just nodded as she ignored whatever it was the lunch ladies had put on her tray, trying to smile as she paid for her lunch. The tray balanced perfectly on one hand, as Isabella paid for her lunch with the other. Securing her tray once more, she began to walk over to where Eric sat. When she was almost there she felt the lunch tray rip away from her grip, and heard it fall to the ground. “What..?” Isa said looking down at the food that laid there on the floor. She looked up to see a boy in front of her, his mocking eyes, and grinning lips. Her tears came back, after she had tried so hard to get them to go away. “Why..?” She asked softly, that may have been the only thing she could say. Willing herself to not cry, took almost all of her energy, all she had left she put into that one word. That one word, that almost every kid has asked, the one word that is never truly answered.
The boy just laughed and said,”Aww, look she’s going to cry! It’s alright, we can go by your favorite store later, wal-mart. Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll give you discount.” Isabella saw Eric stand up, his hands were forced into fists as he pushed the guy out of the way. “What’s your problem?” He asked angrily as he grabbed Isa’s shoulder gently. The guy looked a bit surprised and said,”Whoah, calm down there. I was just playing around...” Eric shook his head. “No you weren’t just playing around. If I ever catch you doing that to her again-“ Eric’s sentence was cut off as another guy punched Eric, and pushed him to the ground. “Marshall you idiot, “ The guy groaned out as he tried to keep Eric out of the way. Isabella’s eyes widened, as she tried to pull the guy off. Instead she got slapped by the guy, the blow came so fast and so hard it took a second before it started to sting. That didn’t stop her though, she wouldn’t let Eric get hurt for it being her fault. My fault...? She thought suddenly stopping just as he was reaching out to the guy. “Get the stupid w*****k away, she’s just getting in the way.” The guy said to Marshall. A firm grip came on Isabella’s shoulders, the hand crushing into her skin. “Get offa’ me!” Isabella said as she attempted to hit the boy that was holding her. “Jake...she wants to hit me..” The guy whimpered like a girl. Isabella thrust her elbows back, making contact with the guys ribs. He groaned, and took a step back. Isabella then punched the guy, and felt another blow hit her cheek. This time it was a punch.
Something in Eric came out that Isabella had never seen, he threw the guy off of him, and tackled the guy that had hit Isabella. Shouts, and warnings came from within the crowd that had gathered around them. The teacher’s had finally come, in time to see Isabella kicking one of the guys as Eric was punching the other. Another tight grip came to her arms, as she felt herself being dragged off by one teacher. And Eric by the other. “Wait! We didn’t even do anything!” Isabella yelled out as she tried to get away. “We saw you Isabella! Don’t try to say you didn’t do anything, come on now.”
