At the dinner table tonight, there was a discussion about the water situation in the world, and with pertainance to the topic, I wondered what the world would be like 30 to 40 years from now... perhaps a war on water? Maybe a return to 60's style? As I thought over chicken and potatoes, my mother commented that there weren't too many people, teenagers especially, that put deep thought into much of anything.

But anybody can really enter such a state of deep thought if they want too, and it only needs the slightest of triggers. Take the tv show Naruto for example, a cartoon dealing with mature themes that is also a favorite of mine. A villain named Zabuza has an apprentice named Haku, and while "Z" seems emotionless and cold, Haku dedicates all his energy towards his benefactor. When Haku is killed, Zabuza pays no attention until some prodding from the titular character Naruto forces Zabuza's inner emotions to come out, crying over the death of his comrade. This poses two interesting points:

1. No matter how hard we try, we cannot supress our emotions to the point where we are no longer human. There's always a few shreds of humanity to switch the brain from intelligent thought to instinct and emotion. This places me into a greater awareness that I myself am human. Not that I don't want to feel, but that I don't want to submit to the selfish nature common to our kind.

2. After Zabuza is placed at his final breaths, he laments that he may not join Haku "where he is going". And yet, one must wonder if Zabuza did join Haku in heaven. The episode highly implies that he does, and perhaps the idea of judgement is a concept that isn't quite clearly identified by people, an ongoing issue of ethics that will serve to keep us from being bored.

Thinking about these things brings my mind to ease, in a sense. It tells me that there is so much out there left to understand, but it's okay if we don't. In fact, it's probably best to leave some things unknown, since that leaves to us the wonderful thing known to us as... "wonder".
