Chapter 1
Heavy sheets of rain fell as we sat in the academy room. I could hear the patter of the rain on the roof over the teachers talking. It was very calming.
“Ms. Inuzuka! Are you still with us?” The teacher asked in a harsh tone of voice that snapped me from my reverie.
“Yes sir.” I replied feeling horrible that I’d gotten distracted so easily. I was a straight ‘A’ student and was pretty good at the physical tests; I always paid good attention even if I’d already read up on the subject and known it perfectly. I practically aced all of my tests.
I glanced down at Kurohoshi; my dog. He was fast asleep on the floor. Lazy bum! I thought and sighed. The clock read 2:30. Almost time to leave!
“Okay kids, tomorrow is the last day you will have to be here. Your graduation test will be tomorrow.” The teacher said and dismissed us. As usual, I was the last to leave the room.
“Come on Kurohoshi. Time to leave.” I said and picked up my messenger bag before starting to walk towards the stairs. About the time that we reached the door the teacher stopped me.
“Kari. I’m worried about you. The last couple of weeks you’ve seemed a bit” He said then thought for a moment. Searching for the right word. “Distant.” He seemed to like that word. For a few heartbeats I couldn’t believe that he’d asked me that; and why he cared.
“Just been thinking.” I replied not exactly whole-heartedly. He looked unhappy and then dismissed me with a flick of his hand. I walked out of the classroom and down the hall. I was almost out before the Kazekage walked into the school followed by a girl with long black hair, black eyes, and an ANBU outfit.
He walked up to me and waited for the girl to walk over as well.
“Ms.Inuzuka, this is Kinna Kuzaki from the hidden leaf village.” He said putting his hand towards the girl. I put my head down slightly. Meeting new people was defiantly not my thing.
“Hi. How’re ya?” Kinna asked happily with a huge grin on her face. She looked towards Kurohoshi. “Who’s this?” I felt the blood slither from my face.
“His name’s uh- Kurohoshi…” I stuttered. She just smiled bigger. The ends of my lips twitched up. Hardly a smile.
“Ah yes well then. Kari, you will be transferring to the hidden leaf village on the account that your mother…well she has passed away.” Kazekage said with grief filled eyes. “Kinna here will be your temporary foster mom until we find a replacement.”
I dropped all of my books and stared at him horror struck. I’d known that my mother was very sick and in the hospital but I never even dreamed that she’d be dead! Especially today of all days.
“T-t-today was…Mom’s birthday…I even had…a present for her…” I said almost in tears. Kinna bent down and looked into my face. I couldn’t even move.
“Come on. We have to get moving and you still have things to pack.” She said standing straight again without another glance at me. She bent down and picked my stuff up and without letting me recover from the shock, grabbed my wrist and dragged me along behind her out into the rain.
~~~~My House~~~~
She hadn’t let go of my wrist until the moment we stepped up to my door.
“Unlock it.” She said indifferently. I shook my head and reached into my bag. It took a moment of rummaging but I got the keys and quickly got the door unlocked. Kurohoshi had stayed right outside in the rain.
“Bring the essentials and nothing else.” She said and looked down at some stuff on the table by the door. I didn’t answer but went straight to my room.
Inside was a small bed, a desk with a desk lamp and a floor lamp. Some clothes and sketch books were also strewn across the floor. I quickly gathered up my sketch books and some clothes from the floor and went over to the closet.
Inside there were a few more sketch books and my diary. I quickly got those and headed out to the hallway. I took a sharp left and went into my mother’s room. I shuffled over to the closet and grabbed the black box in the bottom.
That’s everything. I thought somberly and went back out to where Kinna was. She was standing right outside the door in the rain. After being sure all my stuff was securely in my bag, I headed out to meet her.
She hardly noticed that I’d come out until after I’d locked the door. Without a word she started walking west towards Konoha. I couldn’t believe I was leaving my home.
