An island caused by the blow-out of an ancient volcano sat in a large rain basin. On the largest hill of the island, there sat an enormous mansion. Designed to represent the flow of water, a mystical energy seemed to flow from the house. A white haired man stood on the large balcony overlooking the north of the lake. A gentle breeze blew over the lake, causing the water to ripple and leaves from the island to fall. The man looked out on the water and sighed.
"Leaving you behind-Life goes on but not for long-When you are away." He said, reciting a haiku.
"My love?" Said a woman standing behind him. She received no answer. He started down at the water, almost lifeless.
"Leaving you behind-Life goes on but not for long-When you are away." He said again, repeating himself. The water beneath him began to swirl into a whirlpool. The wind blew stronger, blowing his hair waverly.
"Hakuri?" She said stepping closer, her silk robe agitated by the blowing winds.
"Leaving you behind-Life goes on but not for long-When you are away." He repeated and the whirlpool of water below him began to dance out of the surface of the lake. A snake-like form of water rose out of the water surface and stretched out in front of him. It danced like ribbon blowing in the wind.
"Hakuri? Are...Are you okay?" She walked closer, almost touching him. Nothing happened, but the water seemed to be watching her, observing.
"Love was here now gone-Nothing left but pain and grief-Love was eternal" He said softly, the wind now stopped, the water fell to the lake, and time seemed to stop for a moment. He took a long deep breath and looked out to the lake, seeing the sun beat down on the still, calm water. Then, a hand touched his shoulder.
"Hakuri? Are you okay?" Said the woman standing next to him.
He turned his head slightly to look at her. "Yeah...I guess...Why?"
"I was just worried is all. Are you sure you're okay?" Her voice spoke of innocence, purity, and bliss.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He said and walked away.
She followed. "You're still not over her are you?"
He turned around shocked. "What? What did you say?" He spoke angerly.
"It's obvious Hakuri...You're still not over her, you've never gotten over her."
Hakuri stood silent, remembering the lost love. "No...You're wrong..."
"No Hakuri." She said placing a hand on his shoulder. "You're wrong, you're lieing you yourself. You're still not over her death." She said and he slowly lowered his head, his white hair covered his eyes. A single tear ran from his eyes and dropped to the wooden floor. "Hakuri, just say it..."
"Renn...I don't love you..." He said slowly, another tear fell from his face.
"Hakuri." She said and he turned his head and looked at her. "Thank you...Thank you for not lieing anymore."
"How long have you known?" He asked slowly.
"Since we met, I knew I would be the rebound type, but I guess I thought that it might be more."
"Renn..."
"Yes Hakuri?"
"Thank you..."
"Hakuri, as I leave you, promise me this." He stood silent. "Promise me that you'll never lead someone on like this. Promise me ne?"
"Hai..." He said and Renn turned away. She walked into their room and packed her things. He stood on the balcony as she put her things in the boat that was used for transport from the island to the land. She stood on the deck as the final bag was placed by the boat pilot. She looked up at him, holding something in her hand. She stepped in the boat and a tear fell from her cheek and into the icy water of the lake. The boat started and began to soar off, heading for the lowest part of the basin where a driver was waiting for her. She looked up before she was too far gone and let her hand loose, a black silk ribbon flew from her palm and rode the drafts from the lake and up on the balcony where Hakuri was. He reached his hand out and took it from the wind and held it close to his heart, as a tear fell from his cheek and hit the water.
