Vi looked at the human girl with a critical eye. "I've heard you're quite something Em."
Being a pure-blood Vi was unwilling to accept that any mortal could be a savior to her race. Her chill in her voice belied her opinion.
"Vi." Jacob warned.
Em was reluctant to sit so close to the female vampire. "I'm really nothing special. Really." She noticed the other male vampire,Shin, in the room. At least, she assumed he was a vampire. He didn't have many of the same physical characteristics that Jacob and Vi shared. He also didn't give Em the usual chill she felt in the presence of vampires. She found herself staring rather intently at the man. He avoided her gaze after a few seconds. She realized what she'd been doing and blushed.
Jacob was standing beside Em, she was clutching something tightly in her fist. "What have you got there?" His voice seemed to bring Em back from some distant place.
"Oh, right." She looked down and opened her hand. "They gave us these after lunch. The other girls hid theirs too. I told them about you, about what you'd offered. They agreed to wait for your thoughts."
Vi shot Jacob a glance. "How many humans know about this? We can't have too many talking Jacob they could give us away!"
Jacob held up one hand. "Calm down Vi, Em is smart and her friends are no less." He turned his attention back to Em's hand. May I?"
Em nodded and held the 'vitamins' out to Jacob. "They said there were something to help us keep up energy. What with the training and mental tests becoming more difficult. Something just didn't seem right. I thought you ought to have a look."
Jacob held the capsules up to the light and then to his nose. "I'm not sure exactly what the compound is, but there is definitely vampire blood in there."
Em looked puzzled and a little sickened. "Why are they feeding us vampire blood? I thought vampires drank human blood."
Vi let out a heavy sigh. "In order for a human to be turned into a vampire they must consume vampire blood either before or after being nearly drained of all of their mortal blood. If a human ingests small amounts of vampire blood they may feel some temporary effects such as increased speed, strength, acute sensory awareness, and the like. It's a ploy no doubt to make turning the chosen more simple. Also, not all humans take well to being turned. Some laps into a death like state where they are neither alive, dead or un-dead. Any humans who get sick from these pills would be likely to not take the turning well. That would be wasted resources."
Jacob was nodding silently when there was a knock on the door. His head turned from the door to Em to Vi. "Hide her." He mouthed to Vi.
Violetta grabbed Em by the wrist and took her to one of the closets in the corner. Em stepped in and Vi, holding a finger to her lips, signaled for Em to stay silent. Vi closed the door as Jacob was opening the door to the room.
