Beware of the fangirl...The diary of a Gaian.
This is the diary of Dawna Celeste, just another ordinary Gaian...or is she?
Protector's nightmare, and fangirl's dream.
I have to admit, I wasn't expecting to share supper with Ian! But I did...and now my darling sidekick thinks I'm flirting with both him and his brother. Silly Sally...
So, I was peering through the sights of my wildly wavering gun, trying to shoot down the hearts that danced in the air in front of me. I did pretty well, I thought...and I guess Ian did too, because as I was leaving the stadium, he detached himself from the rest of the Barton team and made a beeline toward me.
"You're pretty scary," he said, and although he was smiling, there was a slight edge to his voice. "If you were a vampire, I'd say you were Zhivago's sister or daughter."
I was quite befuddled, and must have looked it, as Sally began to sing "Shot through the 'eart, and you're to blame..."
I was about to tell her to get lost, when Ian did it for me. "Be quiet," he said, his hand brushing his chest...clearly it was an unconscious gesture, but Sally blushed and stopped singing. "It's not funny," he went on, "and neither is that accent you put on. Now go do something useful and let me talk to your friend." Sally, looking very abashed at her gaff, mumbled something about running being a nice safe sport, and disappeared back into the stadium.
"I...I'm sorry she sang that..." I said, wishing I could think of something brighter to say. "Um...sorry for being so good..."
"A sniper," Leon boomed from behind me. "Ian, my boy, what are you doing talking to an apprentice sniper? And not even on our team! Bad choice of friends..."
"Dawna, 'ave you got your compact with you?" Sally had reappeared at exactly the wrong time, and worse, had her hat off.
"I don't have a compact, and you know it!," I snapped at her, making shooing motions toward the stadium while stepping between her and Leon. However, Sally refused to budge.
"Yes you do," she said. "The posh-looking silver one that Cindy gave you right before the games, the one that looks like it 'as make-up in it, but it's really got a comb and a little looking-glass..." Unfortunately, it took me at least five seconds to realize that the last word was an old word for "mirror" and by that time, Sally had caught Leon's attention.
"Who are you, kid?" he asked in what I knew was a voice of false friendliness.
"Sally, guv," Sally replied unsuspectingly. "I'm Dawna's sister."
I pulled the compact out of the inner pocket of my skirt and shoved it at Sally, but before I could shoo her away, Leon asked "How old are you, kid? I didn't know Dawna had a sister."
"That's none of your business!" I snapped, but Sally said "Nearly thirteen!" anyway. Leon looked only slightly surprised, and I could see realization dawning across his face.
Something clearly had to be done at once, so I did it, by exploding at Sally, calling her a little nuisance, and telling her to be off and comb her hair before showing her face in public..."And lose that fake accent too!" I added as she walked off.
In response Sally turned and shouted at the top of her voice, "'Oo's no'hing but a big fat snob 'oo wan's 'oo impress all 'eh o'her snobs so as she can pre'end 'eir 'er s'inkin ma'es! "A's wha' 'oo are!" (I think I have transliterated that correctly!) Then she stormed into the stadium.
Well, at least that outburst had the effect I had desired, namely to stun Leon into silence and hopefully derail his train of thought. As I slowly figured out what Sally had actually said to me, I realized that what I had thought was an affected accent was nothing at all compared to what Sally could do if she wanted to.
Needless to say, after all that mess, I was very shocked when Ian invited me to have a sandwich supper with him at the Barton Pub. Despite a twinge of worry about Leon, who was wandering off with a glazed look on his face, I agreed instantly, and we had a very nice time. We just talked about random things, but it was fun, and it was really nice to really meet the guy I've thought about for years. I nearly told him that this was the supper I would have gotten him to join me for if he hadn't been shot way back then, but decided that it would be as tactless as Sally's singing. So yeah, a good evening.
Speaking of Sally...she dropped all the accent when we reconciled and apologized in private tonight, or rather, last night...but I think I'll encourage her to keep the accent in public, and do the full thing when in Leon's presence. I'm sure I can pass it off to her as a joke, and it should make it much harder for Leon to connect her to Cindy, the impeccably-spoken news reporter.
