Claire sat back, stomach full, smiling as her friends talked around her. Felix was deep in conversation with Susan; they acted as if they’d known each other for ages. Smiling, at least she wouldn’t have to worry about her, Claire looked over at Jake. He was grinning at her.
“You think you’re really clever, don’t you?” she said accusingly.
“Of course,” he said with pride. “Look how happy they are.”
Her giggles brought Felix and Susan out of their discussion to stare at her.
“What’s so funny?” Felix asked confusion evident on his face.
Choking, Claire managed to swallow her laughter and flapped her hand at them. “Don’t worry about it, carry on with your discussion,” she begged.
With a shrug, they did, losing themselves once more in the simple pleasure of talking. Ruefully, Claire turned back to Jake. “I’ve missed this, I really have.”
Before he could answer, a shadow fell across the table. “You look pleased with yourself,” a familiar voice sneered, venom dripping from the words.
