Someone asked what the ACORN scandal is about on their lj. I'm forgetting who, so posting it here.

ACORN hired people to register new voters. Some of the employees put fake names on the registrations and sent them in. ACORN is required by law to submit all registrations handed in. The people handing in fake name registrations are in trouble with the law for obvious reasons. As people like Mickey Mouse are not likely to show up to vote and the fake registrations are being weeded out there is not much worry about actual election fraud in this case, only registration fraud, which is again related to individuals out for a buck. It's not as dangerous as systematically striking eligible minority voters from the rolls, a standard Republican strategy since the 2000 election. Yes, it's wrong to submit false registration, yes the people who did it are meing prosecuted as they should be.

Apparently, about thirteen years ago, when Obama was a practicing lawyer, he and the justice department acted on ACORN's behalf to make Illinois do "motor voter" registration. There is nothing sinister about this.

Apparently, McCain was a keynote speaker at an ACORN meeting, so he didn't object to non-partizan voter registration at the time.

Now McCain is trying to use Obama and the justice department backing "Motor voter" registration thirteen years ago as proof that Obama is somehow involved in recent registration fraud, despite his own more recent involvement in ACORN. Again, neither candidate has done anything improper when it comes to ACORN. The real issue here is McCain making yet more spurious accusations about things that 1. Make no sense. 2. McCain himself has done.

I keep wondering if McCain even owns a mirror.
