Chapter 1 The Party
It was November 11, my birthday. Tomorrow is November 12, the best and worst day of my life.
I saw three guys walking towards me in the dim lights of the party. I was lying on my bed in my room away from everybody else. I recognized the two guys on the sides as Cameron and Austin. The one in the middle was the hottest and most popular guy in school, Jared. Every girl all but melted when he was around. I mean sure, he was hot…muscled…sweet…cool…hot… No wait, I already said that, but that’s not the point. I didn’t get what was so special about him. He was one of my close friends, but I saw them even closer now, maybe 5 to 7 feet away. I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep. I was really good at doing this because this was how I got myself out of school when I was really tired. I could feel their eyes on me and then I heard a voice. “Dudes, do you think she’s sleeping?” It sounded like Austin. “I dunno, maybe. It looks like it to me,” someone responded in a hushed voice. I was pretty sure it was Cameron. “Well, I’m going to wake her up. It’s her birthday party, she really shouldn’t be missing out on it because she’s a little tired,” another voice said. Jared, I was absolutely sure. A thought sprang in my mind all of a sudden. Hold on…oh my God, I completely forgot it was my BIRTHDAY. I felt a poke on my side as the thought left my mind as soon as it had appeared. It took everything I had not to laugh. Then I felt a nudge on my shoulder. “Hey Shayla, wake up,” Jared said in a soft whisper. “Wake up sleeping beauty,” he said. I heard Cameron and Austin chuckle quietly. I faked waking up with a quiet moan. “Mmm…” I mumbled quietly. “Hey Shayla, happy birthday,” they all said in unison. I didn’t open my eyes yet and I didn’t realize that Jared was leaning right over me. I sat up automatically without thinking and hit his head on accident. “Ow…” I mumbled to soft for anyone to hear. I rubbed my forehead and opened my eyes. “Oops, sorry Jared,” I said blushing slightly. “Oh, don’t worry about it Shayla,” he said smiling at me. “The main thing I need to know is, are you okay?” I found myself staring into his deep, blue-green eyes that looked black in the dim light. I noticed that he was staring back into mine. I looked down embarrassed. “Err, yeah totally.” “Oh okay good,” he said, oblivious to my sudden shyness. “Okay, so why are you guys over here? I mean like here, by me,” I said embarrassed by how stupid I sounded. “Well, it is your birthday and I got you a little present too,” he said. I could hear the smile in his voice. I looked up and saw a little black box in his hand. It looked a lot like a jewelry case. At the same time, I noticed Austin and Cameron walking away quietly. I saw them exchange amused and jealous looks on their faces. A small part of my mind wondered what that was about. “You could’ve just put it on the present’s table in the living room you know. You didn’t have to come all the way to my room to do it,” I mumbled. “Yeah, I know, but knowing you, you won’t open any of your presents until everybody leaves. I want to see your reaction when you see it.” He handed me the little box and I examined the cover. It had a little note that said ‘Happy Birthday!’ on it in shiny, silver words. I opened the box and in it was a silver necklace. The little pendant attached to it was a word. It said ‘Shayla’…wait Shayla…oh wait, that’s my name! I suppressed a smile from my insignificant slow moment. “Oh my gosh, I love it Jared!” I said smiling. “Thanks, it looks expensive though, I don’t want you spending a lot of money on me. I mean it’s just a present,” I said rambling on and on and on. I caught myself and covered my mouth. “Oops, sorry.” “Ha, it’s okay. I’m glad you like it though. And don’t worry about how much I spent, just accept it and move on! I mean, it was less than a hundred bucks, no need for a heart attack! Anyway, need some help with that?” he asked, holding his hand out to help put the necklace on. “Oh yeah, sure,” I said, handing the necklace to him. He jumped onto my bed and sat behind me moving my hair out of the way to get the necklace on. I could feel the cold chain on my skin and his warm hands touch the back of my neck. “There ya go,” he said dropping his hands back to his sides. I could feel his breath on my neck and I got shy all over again. “Oh, err…thanks,” I said quietly, looking down. Gosh, that was late! Stupid, stupid, stupid Shayla. He laughed slightly and got off my bed. “Well, bye for now,” he said. He started to walk away and my automatic response was “No, don’t go.” I was on my knees with on hand on the bed and the other stretched out towards him. He turned around and saw my pose. His expression was strange; it was mixed between a smile and a smirk. I didn’t even know you could do that. I retreated out of my pose embarrassed and hid my face with my long bangs. I was in a kneeling pose with my hands in my lap now. “I...err…you…um, didn’t see that,” I said quietly. “Actually, pretend I didn’t say or do anything.” “Okay, I will but I’m going to stay here with you. I want to learn some about you,” he said in a suddenly good mood. Before I could even think of an answer, he started walking back towards me. He sat on my bed and faced me. “Okay…um, so what do you want to know?” He asked me a whole bunch of different questions ranging from what my favorite colors were to who my favorite actor was. He started to get to know a lot about me from this “interrogation”. I got to learn about him too. We had a lot of similarities along with differences. We both liked the colors black and red but he liked lizards and geckos while I was terrified of them. I wouldn’t tell him that though. Then he asked me a question that made me quiet. “Shayla, who do you like from school? Will you please tell me? I know it’s none of my business and all, but I won’t tell anyone,” he pleaded. “Um…well, it’s kind of embarrassing to say. To you especially…do I have to say it? Can I just tell you later?” I begged. He made an over dramatic sigh. “Fine Shayla, be that way!” He paused. I was silent. “You know I’m kidding right? I’ll wait for you to tell me. I’ve got all night.” He glanced at the alarm clock next to my bed. “Actually, no I don’t. It’s already 11:30 PM; I’m pretty sure everybody left already. Aw, crap! Cameron and Austin probably left too. How am I supposed to get home now?” “Well, you could stay here I guess. My mom can take both of us to school tomorrow…or I can go wake her up. She’ll be mad but you’ll get a ride home.” “Well I’ll just stay here. I don’t want to be a trouble to your parents,” he said. I think he was trying to be polite. “Okay, I’ll go get you a couple extra blankets,” I said jumping off my bed and walking out the door. A few minutes later, I came back with the blankets in my hands. “Sorry I took so long,” I apologized. “I couldn’t find them where they should’ve been.” I put the blankets on the ground and started to make a small bed type thing. He was lying down on my bed and watching me. “You know, you’re bed is really comfy,” he said still looking at me even though I was done making the bed. “Oh, well you can sleep on my bed, I don’t really care,” I said looking up at him. “I’ll sleep on the ground. Besides, you are the guest,” I said smiling. “That might be true…” – I raised my eyebrow – “Okay, it is true, but you are the birthday girl. What do you want to do?” “I want the guest to pick what he wants to do,” I said smirking. “Hmm…you’re good. Okay, I want you to tell me who you like.” “Hey, that’s cheating! We’re only talking about who’s sleeping where, not who likes who!” “Ha, aww. Please?” “Ugh you!” I said staring at him with irritation in my eyes. “Yes me?” he asked teasingly. I could tell that he was obviously just trying to make me even madder. “I hate you,” I said annoyed. “I love you too,” he said mockingly and I rolled my eyes. I jumped on my bed and sat on his stomach. “Okay, look. Why the heck do you want to know who I like so badly?!” I said loudly. “Because you’re a cool girl and I want to know. Please will you tell me? It’s killing me –well not literally– not getting to know! It’s unfair!” I got off his stomach and lied down on the farthest point from him on my bed as I could. “Well then, I hope you enjoy disappointment Jared because life isn’t fair,” I said facing my back towards him. “Aw, come on Shayla, don’t be like that!” he said. It sounded like he was complaining. “Nah, I will, I’m just going to close my eyes and ignore you, okay?” I said rhetorically. He grabbed my waist and pulled me towards him. He played with my hair and was saying unnecessary thing in my ear like “You’re so hot when you’re irritated.” By now, I was pretty pissed off. “Gosh Jared, stop!!” I yelled. It seemed like he was waiting for me to break out. “Stop what?” he asked innocently. Ugh! Never mind, do whatever you like!” I said and turned away again. “You’re like the most irritating person ever!” “Aww, Shayla, you don’t really mean that do you?” he asked playfully. “Maybe I do, maybe I don’t,” I said. I clapped my hands twice and the lights turned off. Then, I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep in Jared’s warm arms. I had a dream. It was so different and strange; it was like I wasn’t on Earth anymore. Everyone looked scary, like monsters and vampires. I screamed because I was afraid and everyone turned to me. I saw a few people I’ve never seen before and they stared at me hungrily with frightening, blood red eyes. It looked as if they wanted to eat me. Then it came to me, they are what I thought: Vampires. I tried to wake myself up, telling myself, ‘Get up!’ ‘It’s just a dream!’ ‘Wake up!’ But I didn’t, and the vampires crept closer, and closer until they surrounded me and they could easily rip out my throat. I was afraid of what was going to happen, the dream was so convincing; it all seemed too real. Thankfully, it was morning time, right around that time when I have to wake up. But when I woke up, it wasn’t a very pleasant awakening. ♥ peaceee!! byee!! ♥
