Part 3 JB's Schemes
Josh didn’t know if he should smile or snarl. JB had obviously arranged this and he even drank the drink that he promised to get him. JB walked over casually, gave a quick glance to the young dark haired girl and smiled evilly to his friend.
“Wow! She’s really cute! Don’t get how you didn’t want to see her for so-” “Please, JB. Don’t go there,” Josh warned him. “Ahh! Too soon, huh? That’s alright! I mean, you must have your personal reasons I guess,” JB said looking up at some clouds that passing by. “Hey! Speaking of which, why did you go through my stuff to begin with?! That’s a total invasion of privacy Benton!” “Yikes! You’re calling me Benton! I must be in trouble,” “That’s not an answer,” said Josh raising an eyebrow. “It was last week at your house, remember? At first I just wanted to check my PMs… but you had your mail open right in front of me! I mean, that’s dangerous you know. Anyone could have just hacked your account that way!” “Eh… Are you saying you were thinking about that?” “Well, anyways! I saw at the bottom of the page, a message from like 6 years ago! And even if you’re the dirtiest person I know, I know you keep your mail tidy. Plus, the fact that it was 6 years old and from a girl was really interesting! I mean, that would make you what, 11? So I snooped,” “Glad you’re not trying to hide that you were snooping…” “And that mail - it totally broke my heart! You’re such a jerk Josh!” “WHA - HEY!”
JB looked back towards Bella and cupped her hands, tears welling up in his eyes. Bella looked surprise and shocked that this stranger (in more ways then one) was suddenly touching her.
“I’m sorry he’s such an insensitive jerk! I’ve tried to raise him right! I really have!” “Raise me?” “Ah! Um – it’s – eh… ok?”
Josh’s temper was rising but as his eyes moved from JB’s ridiculous pose back to Bella, he felt like she seemed relieved at this encounter regardless of JB getting mixed up in it. The trio began to walk into the city to enjoy the rest of the day. Josh was finding it difficult to not ask Bella all kinds of questions about the last few years as JB interjected a few times to fill in the gaps with comments of his own. Soon, it was supper time and the boys knew they needed to get going or else face the heard of people that would surely leave after their meals.
“Man, this sucks! I feel like I was just getting to know you again,” said Josh putting a hand behind his head. “Well, we can still write, can’t we? And maybe next time I’ll head over to Barton and say hello to your mom and dad,” answered Bella. “Man, I’m so sappy. I don’t wanna go,” “Josh, you got the tickets right? You better get them stamped before we get on the train,” said JB as he looked at the train station. “Right! I’ll be right back!” he said as he dashed off.
Once Josh was out of earshot, JB bent low to come face to face with Bella. The girl seemed to already become accustomed to JB’s piercing gazes as she only flinched by a bit.
“I have a proposition for you…”
**
The train sounded and the boys embarked and made their way back to their home town. Josh sighed quietly as he sat, JB facing him in the opposite seat.
“All’s well that ends well!” exclaimed JB as he took his autographed copy of Gambino’s book and admired it proudly. “You… don’t even talk to me,” “WHAT? How can you still be mad at me when I made your dream come true! I reunited two lost souls together and got Gambino’s signature to boot! Hey! Hey! Don’t you think his handwriting looks like mine?! I’m totally destined to be his successor!”
Josh’s face seemed to have lost all the tension in it as a pensive expression glossed it.
“Thanks… I don’t think I would have had to guts to do this on my own…” “I know. You put on a front but you’re actually kinda sentimental huh? Heh, figures,” “What do you mean by ‘figures’?” “It’s just that a crazy playboy like you-” “No thanks to you,” “-Is really such a mushy-wushy widdle little kid on the inside. I wonder what Bella would think of you and your lady-killing ways?” “She doesn’t have to know about that, and that’s the only good part about living far,”
JB grinned and looked out to see the country-side of East Durem roll by. Their vacation was half done and both JB and Josh were preparing to enter their last year of high school. As Josh began to doze off to the gentile vibrations of the train, JB pulled out his phone and dialled. ‘Good thing he nodded off! Any further and I’d have to pay long distance!’ he thought as the call was received on the other end.
“Hello? So, what do you think? Yeah, what did your dad say? …Yeah, but did you tell him what I told you to say? Right! Well, is there anyone you can ask in proximity? So that’s settled then? Awesome! Then I’ll see you soon! PM me if anything changes. Okay, bye!”
At the sound of JB’s phone turning off, Josh stirred and began to mumble. “I’m sorry…” JB gave a slight jump but realized that his best friend was probably still feeling a bit guilty of the events that occurred. The brown haired boy’s smile broadened into a grin. Satisfied of his actions, he leaned back on his chair and let the same mute, therapeutic rumble, lull him to sleep.
