Okay so today I saw the Star Trek movie. [I'm gone tomorrow and Mom'll be in Santa Barbara on mom's day, so her present was today.] It was, and I say this with no regret or doubt, the ONLY truly good movie I've seen in years. Even if I had expectations for it, I would say this.
Okay now the only two spoilers I'll give are that Leonard Nimoy is in this movie as an alternate-future/reality Spock, and a gigantic ship that looks a bit like.... [extra insignificant spoiler] Sovereign from Mass Effect [the gigantic ship that looks like a hand in the beginning of the game], except green and loud as HELL!
It features the good ol' crew with a few minor [and quick-fixed] changes in positions. It shows just a bit of the origins of Spock and Kirk, as well as how come the Romulan villain IS the villain. It even has the trademark phrases: "Are you out of you Vulcan mind?!", "DAMNIT JIM, I'm a doctor not a [disclosed]!!", and "I'm givin' her all she's got captain." Along with its funny moments. And I mean a LOT of funny moments.
The sound-effects are awesome, although sometimes a bit over and underdone. That's only slightly. There's a pop for a black hole... That's probably the only overdone part. All of the sound-effects fit in with each other and the visuals perfectly [could you expect anything less?], and the acting is superb. There are [I'm guessing] two or three new alien species in the movie, two of them in a brief part where they chase Kirk, and the second of the two WILL freak you out. [Not really a spoiler, since it's predictable.]
The special effects... well... second to none, if there's nothing better. Compare it to ANY other movie as well as real-life and you'll see how damn close it is to the real thing. No joke, no lie. You'd have to be a complete moron or blind to not see it. [And if you're blind, how are you reading this?]
It's a decently long movie, too. I don't have a watch, but I'm guessing over 2 1/2 hours.
Okay now for addressing the hype. FOR ONCE, THE CRITICS WERE RIGHT! Or as close to right as it really is. This movie was actually GOOD. Not great, but good. I can't say bad, because they had alot more good parts than bad [like for one Kirk's impulsiveness... and accidental boob-groping]. And I can't say great, because if a movie was great, its sequel WILL be s**t. [I'm looking at you Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean trilogies].
