To my sister:
I know that news must by now have reached even the furthest reaches of the realm that part of the great forests have been burnt. From such a close distance I am sure you could see the flames. A few of our relatives that lived by the river were caught up in the fire. Some of them have made their way to our home until transport comes to take them to town. I hope the transports come soon.
Do you remember our Uncle? He came only once, during winter a few years after you were born. He is here now. Oddly enough, he told me that during these seasons he prefers to stay outside. And so he is staying outside. We have been trying to make him come in to the warmth. One of the Aunts has suggested trying to lull him to sleep with food. I think that he must be rather used to her ideas, for he seems to eat everything we put in front of him, in addition to some of almost everybody’s helpings and more besides. Last night I had to hide some of the pantry so we could have something this morning.
Although the paper is longer I do not have much more news. I have faith that you will be getting along there for I know that you are strong. Keep it up for me.
Love From,
Your Brother,
Jonathon
