Lina is a junior high school student, in the same class as Luchia. She has a very serious, stalwart personality. She's initially somewhat of a loner, but she quickly learns to warm up to Luchia and Hanon. Because of her beauty, and her cool attitude, Lina has gained the admiration of many of the girls in her class. For some reason, she chooses to wear a boy's school uniform every day.
Lina is actually a mermaid, or more specifically, the Princess of the North Atlantic Ocean. Lina was raised as a princess within the mermaid world. However, Gaito and the Dark Lovers destroyed her kingdom. Lina showed up on dry land in order to search for the other mermaid princesses; unfortunately, she also found Kaito, whom she was instantly suspicious of, since she (correctly) sensed that he had a connection to Gaito.
Lina is more than just a mermaid princess. Using her Green Pearl, Lina can transform into Green Pearl Voice, and use the power of her singing voice as an offensive attack against the evil creatures of the sea.

Nanami Luchia (Princess_Melody
)
Luchia is junior high school student who is both blessed, and cursed, with the same personality characteristics that befall almost every shoujo heroine: a simple heart, and a simple mind. Fortunately, Luchia also has courage and determination in abundance. She lives and works in the public baths, Pearl Waters, along with her "older sister" Nikora, and her guardian penguin, Hippo.
Lucha is actually a mermaid, or more specifically, the Princess of the North Pacific Ocean. When she was six years old, Luchia gave her pearl to a boy that she saved from drowning. When she turned thirteen, however, she was forced to assume a human form, show up on dry land, and search for her pearl. Nikora explained that Luchia needed her pearl in order to become an adult; and in the mermaid world, thirteen is considered the age of adulthood (as was explained in chapter 06, and later again in chapter 32).
But Luchia is more than just a mermaid princess. Using her Pink Pearl, Lucia can transform into Pink Pearl Voice, and use the power of her singing voice as an offensive attack against the evil creatures of the sea.
At the beginning of the manga, Luchia did not know that she was a princess, and Nikora did not explain to her the real reason that she needed her pearl (which would be to summon Aqua Regina). The reason for Luchia being raised not knowing that she was a princess is rather complicated. When Luchia was born, Madame Taki, her kingdom's resident fortune-teller, oversaw the baby princess's birth, as she had so many before. But Luchia's pearl shone with a light brighter than any Taki had seen before, and in that moment, Taki saw Luchia's future, and saw that Lucia was burdened with a "dark and deep hardship." Unsure of what to do, Taki decided to raise the baby Lucia not as a princess, but as a normal mermaid, until the day came when she would be old enough to be told her fortune.
AGE NOTES: Chapter 32 confirms that Luchia is six years old when she gives her pearl to Kaito. Luchia is thirteen years old in chapter 01 of the manga. In chapter 11, she observes her fourteenth birthday.
Hosho Hanon (xxHanon
)
Hanon is junior high school student in the same class as Luchia. In some ways, she can seem very wise and mature for someone her age, and she certainly considers herself to be quite adult-like and worldly, especially regarding her romantic pursuits. But most of the time, however, Hanon is happy to be a fun-loving, girly person. Hanon lived in an apartment by herself at the beginning of the manga, but she later moves into Pearl Waters to share a home with Luchia. Hanon is actually a mermaid, or more specifically, the Princess of the South Atlantic Ocean. Hanon was raised as a princess within her own kingdom. When Gaito and the Dark Lovers attacked her kingdom, Hanon managed to flee, and escaped to dry land. There she found Luchia, whom she instantly recognized as a mermaid.
But Hanon is more than just a mermaid princess. Using her Aqua Pearl, Hanon can transform into Aqua(mizuiro) Pearl Voice, and use the power of her singing voice as an offensive attack against the evil creatures of the sea.

Karen (_Sunshine_Sango
)
Karen is the Princess of the Antarctic Ocean. Using her Purple Pearl, she can transform into Purple Pearl Voice. Karen is actually Noel's twin sister (the slightly younger twin, to be exact). Noel and Karen were born at the same time and at the same moment, even though they were born at opposite poles of the Earth. Despite the fact that they consider themselves to be twins, however, they have never actually met each other face-to-face. Still, Karen obviously cares a great deal about Noel. When she hears that Noel has been captured by Gaito, Karen vows to rescue her, no matter what. Karen is a difficult character to understand. She first appears in chapter 09, in her human form, essentially stalking Luchia and company. She also seems to have a mysterious interest in Mitsuki-sensei.
At first, even though Karen will not fully reveal herself to the other three mermaids, she still appears willing to help them out from afar. In chapter 10, she appears in her mermaid form to return Luchia's microphone to her (it had been knocked out of her hand by one of Izuuru's attacks). And in chapter 11, by acting as a self-described "pest," she interferes in time to prevent Luchia from revealing her true identity to Kaito. Karen may look like she has ill intentions at the end of that chapter, but actually, she may have been protecting Luchia. It wouldn't do anyone any good if Luchia turned into foam.
In the end, however, when Karen finally does reveal herself as Purple Pearl Voice, she also finally states that she has no intention of becoming friends with the other mermaids. She blames them (especially Lina) for Noel's capture. "I can't believe in any of you," she tells them. And she intends to rescue Noel by herself. Unfortunately, however, things don't exactly work out the way that Karen had planned...

Coco (coco cutie
)
Coco is the princess of the South Pacific Ocean. Using her Yellow Pearl, she can transform into Yellow Pearl Voice. She can also assume a human form in order to move about on dry land. Coco has already been captured by Gaito by the time that the manga begins. She spends the majority of the first story arc asleep within Gaito's castle.
Coco is a difficult character to understand, especially since she is only active at the very end of the manga. She seems to be a very kind, gentle person with a normally bright, sunny personality. She is often visually associated with yellow daisies. Coco is also very brave, however, and very loyal to her friends - loyal to a fault. And Coco's closest, dearest friend is none other than Sara. When Coco is awoken and freed from Gaito's castle in chapter 14, she, for some indiscernible reason, decides instead to stay behind with Sara. Perhaps Coco did not want to leave Sara behind. Perhaps Coco had enough faith in the other mermaid princesses to believe that they would come back for her again, and when they did, then she would be able to do something for Sara. Who knows? Coco's motives for willingly staying behind as Gaito's prisoner are certainly debatable. But when she is awoken again in chapter 19 and realizes that the castle around her is crumbling and that the final battle is occurring, Coco bravely and simply does what she must do. And it is Coco's love, and Coco's song, that ultimately starts Sara back on the path to her true self.
In the second story arc of the manga, Coco has a bit more "screentime," and more of a chance to display her normal, playful personality. It should be noted, however, that in the manga, Coco is a much more gentle person than her rather brash, outspoken anime counterpart. However, like in the anime, Coco still likes to have fun, hang around boys, and occassionally (albeit rarely) displays a sexy, sophisticated side of her personality.
Noel (Holly G1rl
)
Noel is the princess of the Arctic Ocean. Using her pearl, she can transform into Blue(Aiiro) Pearl Voice. Within the manga, Noel has not yet appeared in a normal human form. Noel is actually Karen's twin sister (the slightly elder twin, to be exact). Noel and Karen were born at the same time and at the same moment, even though they were born at opposite poles of the Earth.
At the beginning of the manga, Noel had managed to escape her destroyed kingdom, and had finally found another fleeing mermaid princess, Lina. Noel and Lina vowed to search for the remaining mermaid princesses, but at that moment, Gaito and Yuuri caught up with them. Noel sacrificed herself so that Lina could escape. Rina is still haunted with the memory of her last moments with Noel; and Noel, for her part, spends the majority of the manga sleeping within Gaito's castle.
Despite the fact that she is Karen's twin sister, Noel seems to be the polar opposite (no pun intended) of Karen in many ways. Noel has a very calm, gentle, caring personality. Rather than leaping into action, Noel instead pauses and reflects before making a decision. The only thing that Noel does impulsively, however, is jump into harm's way if that's what it takes to protect her loved ones. Noel sacrifices herself to Gaito twice in the manga, the first time for Lina, and the second time for Karen. Noel's courage, and capacity for self-sacrifice, are the personality traits that she actually shares in common with Karen.

Sara was once the princess of the Indian Ocean. Once, a long time ago. However, she fell in love with a human, and that love ended in tragedy. The human that Sara loved promised to run away with her. Thus, the time for their promised meeting came.... and went. Sara waited and waited, but he never showed up. Finally, Sara came to the conclusion that he must not have returned her love after all. Suddenly overwhelmed with anger, loneliness, and grief, Sara screamed her rage at the heavens, and threw a cataclysmic tantrum that caused a devastating storm to sweep across her ocean. "All I wanted was to become happy with Mitsuki... I never wanted to be born as a princess!!"
That storm was the storm that drowned Domoto Kaito's parents, and the same storm in which Kaito and Luchia first met.
During the storm, Sara blacked out. When she eventually woke up again, she was stunned to see that she had utterly destroyed her own kingdom.
Convinced that she was no longer fit to be a princess, and that she could never be loved by the one that she loved most, Sara thought to herself, It would be best if I just disappeared forever. Sara swam away from the ruins of her ocean kingdom, and down into the blackest depths of the deep sea.
Sara swam, down and down and down, until she found a strange castle. A castle, a gate, and a key.
Sara knew who the castle belonged to. She'd heard the stories about the clan that Aqua Regina had sealed beneath the ocean. And there was the key that would unlock the gate of the castle, just sitting there, unguarded, waiting for someone to pick it up...
"I am no longer a princess. I am no longer anything...!"
Sara picked up the key.
And then, from that time onward, I threw everything away... I threw it away, this world of nothing but lies...
Seira (Kagome-foxgirl
)
Seira is introduced as the future princess of the Indian Ocean, the successor who will follow in Sara's place. However, there's just one tiny problem... Seira hasn't been born yet. Despite not yet being born, however, Seira is on some level already a self-aware entity, and she appears to Luchia as a spirit that takes the form of a young mermaid. Seira's story begins when Luchia hears a child's voice in her dreams, calling for help. Following the source of these mysterious pleas, Luchia dreams that she journeys to the ruins of the Indian Ocean kingdom. There she meets the ghost of Sara, surrounded by tiny spheres of light. Sara explains what the mysterious lights are:
The life breath of the Indian Ocean is forming into spheres of light. These are all gathering together... These spheres of light are called "fragments of the heart." They are necessary for Seira to be born, not just as a mermaid, but as a woman. Love, and friendship, and the power of belief are being gathered into the heart of this girl.
Unfortunately, the extraordinary energy of Seira's "fragments of the heart" are coveted by another: a villainous creature named Mikeru. He attacks the yet-unborn Seira, stealing the fragments of her heart. Now Luchia must pursue Mikeru and fight to reclaim the fragments of Seira's heart. Luchia carries the Orange Pearl with her everywhere. When she finds another fragment of Seira's heart, it is absorbed inside the Orange Pearl, and Seira learns how to feel an emotion like love, friendship, or belief in another.
During most of the second story arc, Seira seems to exist inside of the Orange Pearl. She can appear before Luchia as an insubstantial spirit, usually to offer encouragement when Luchia is feeling down. When Seira is first introduced in chapter 21, she comes across as somewhat of a brat - and she is, even taking into account her age. For example, she taunts Luchia for crying about Kaito. However, as the manga progresses, and as Seira learns more about love and friendship, she matures greatly. Seira may still be just a little girl, but she comes to understand Luchia's feelings on a profound level. Eventually, Seira becomes Luchia's staunchest supporter.
