Aeris scoffed as she looked out on the Cyantrian city of Gora. The civilization had been pulling itself apart since the 3000s, and she felt she was partially to blame. Her dark brown eyes scanned the rows of new and improved buildings. Where were the temples? The ancient architecture? She was living where Greece used to be, before the super continent of Cyantre had been formed, but there was nothing left of the rich culture. They had torn everything down when they decided that the Alien-Human Relations Center should be in that part of Europe. She rolled her eyes and was about to close the curtains when Kai, the not-so-new kid on the block, walked by. He looked up and smiled for a moment before continuing on his way. Her face flushed. It was almost impossible for her to breath. He had always been so cute when he smiled, but she'd never let him know that. She didn't like him for his looks, but it never hurt to be cute. After a bit of daydreaming, she realized the time. It was already almost 7:00 p.m.. The humans, if you could even call them humans anymore, would be out in a bit. If they saw her, they could kill her or force her to go through one of their repulsive experiments. She sighed and sat on her bed. "Close curtains. Lock doors and windows." she demanded, and the house did what she had told it. She wondered if Kai had gotten indoors before the rush. "House... Call Kai." she sighed. Again, the house did what it had been told. A screen appeared in front of her face. After a few seconds, she got her answer. "Hello?" he asked, his voice smooth and calm. He hadn't enabled video. "Hello, Humanoid." she replied, playfully. The screen almost immediately had his picture on it. "Aeris... Worried about my safety?" he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. His black hair fell over his right eye, and his pale skin stood out against the dark room. "Of course! Us pure humans have to stick together!" But she wasn't really a pure human. She was an incarnation of one of six divine powers, but she didn't know which one. "Uh-huh... And the fact that we could be destroyed for not going through the experiments has nothing to do with anything." he replied with a smirk. "Shut up, Kai." she snapped. "I'm hanging up, now..." "Later, Chickadee..." "Seeya tomorrow..." "Yeah... You should come over... I can make a mean microwave dinner." "Do you really even know how to cook?" "Not at all..." "Fine! I'll visit, but I'm going to cook! You'll have a real meal! Bye." "Later." Both screens went blank before disappearing. Aeris walked over to her closet, looking at herself in the full-length mirror. What to wear? "House. Help me put together a nice little outfit. I want to look cute and dark at the same time..." There was a sudden flash, and the mirror reflected the same face and different clothes. Several outfits were shown. After some time, she chose a black, pleated skirt, a black and purple striped top, black sneakers, purple striped stockings, and a small purple bow. "I'm going to sleep now..." she yawned. She would be up at the crack of dawn to begin with. That's when Analiese liked to practice her control of fire. She was the only one who even had a clue to her divine powers. She crawled into the small bed and fell asleep. It wasn't long until she woke up to screams and the sounds of a feeding frenzy. Her eyes widened. One less pure human. "House! Call Kai immediately!" she shouted, sitting upright. The screen appeared. No answer. "Again!" Still no answer. "Override the sound level and call again!" Again. No answer. She nearly screamed. Had he forgotten to lock his doors? Was he dead? She had no clue what was going on, and she didn't like it. Suddenly the frenzy stopped. If it really was him, he was dead now. She looked at the clock and shook her head. It was almost the curfew for the creatures, which meant that she could rush to Kai's house any minute. She heard the grumbling and shuffling of the hundreds of annoyed beings returning to their homes. She had to wait for a bit before she could feel the heat of fire. "House... Is the sun out?" she asked as she pulled on her outfit. "Yes." a computerized voice replied. "Good... Unlock doors and open curtains." She heard the clicking and the curtain flew open. She sighed and walked out the door. She hated walking through the streets, especially after an attack. The asphalt would have a dark spray of crimson or thick pools of sticky blood, and the scent of iron tainted the fresh air. She absolutely hated the sight of the remains. They were usually just bone and innards stripped of muscle and flesh. The bones sometimes only had small pieces of muscle and there was always blood. As she neared Kai's house, she was overwhelmed by the sight. The scent enveloped her, but there was no fresh blood. The blood seemed very old. It was dry and brown, even though the attack had only been a short while back, and there were no remains. She blinked a few times and stepped around the dark stain on the ground before knocking on Kai's door. He opened the door, and she sighed in relief. "What happened last night!?" she gasped. "I called and called, but you never answered! I was scared to death!" He looked confused for a moment and turned to look in his house. Some of his neck was exposed, showing off a scar like claw marks. "I wish I knew..." She gasped again and placed her hand on the scar gently. "When did you get that?" Again with the confused looks. "Come on in... I think I'm missing some of my memories." Aeris nodded slowly and sat on a large sofa. His house was painted black with small, glowing, white dots that represented the stars on the night of his birth. The furniture was 21st century style. It was really outdated for the year 9024. "How in the hell could you lose your memories?" she asked. "I don't know. The last thing I remember was going to sleep after our conversation." he replied. "Well... I went to sleep but I woke up to the sound of screams... They were slightly girlish..." "And you think that it could have been me?" "There's a giant pool of dried blood... So... Yeah..." "And you're calling my alleged screams girly?" "What do you want me to say? That they were girly in a manly sort of way?" "Can you please quit verbally removing my manhood!?" "Let me think about it for a moment... No." He sighed. "How am I still alive if it was me? I mean... I've got a scar that I didn't have before this morning. How does that even make sense? And there was a little girl running around my house this morning..." Aeris shot up. "Is she still here?" "Yeah... I think so..." "Where?" "How should I know?" She scoffed and began to storm around the house. A little girl was sitting on the kitchen counter. she had golden pigtails and a big, blue eyes. "Hi there, miss!" she giggled. Aeris stared for a moment. "What's your name?" "I'm Gabriel! I know who you are." "You're from the first clan of angels, aren't you?" "That's right, Aeris!" "He's one of us, isn't he? That's why you couldn't let him die." "You're smart!" Aeris sighed and leaned against the wall. "He's a night angel, isn't he?" "It was all I could do." Gabriel replied, jumping from the counter. Kai snorted in laughter from behind the two of them. "You two are crazy..." Aeris shot a look at him before continuing their conversation. "What's his alignment?" "Air..." Gabriel replied with a smile. "And mine?" "Look to the past." Aeris sighed. She knew what those four words meant. Kai raised an eyebrow. "What the hell's going on here?" "Is the door closed?" Aeris asked, her usually harsh eyes softening. "This is going to take some time to explain, and word of it doesn't need to get out." Kai scratched the back of his head, looking extremely annoyed. He glanced at the door and nodded. "It's closed... Now would you mind explaining what the hell is going on!?" Aeris nodded and jumped onto the kitchen counter with ease. "How much do you know about the history of Greece?" Kai shrugged. "Not a whole lot, but I'm guessing you know quite a bit..." "My family is purely Greek. I think we were one of two families... But anyways... There were gods and goddesses that controlled everything..." "Isn't that the same with most old religions, though?" "Some... Polytheistic religions... What these religions don't mention is that they had angels." "Like in the Bible?" "Yep... Gabriel is one of them..." "How does this even explain why I am still alive?" "Six gods and goddesses gave up their power to be mortal. They were the gods of air, water, and eternity, and the goddesses of fire, earth and chaos." "Again... How?" "I'm getting to that! Anyways... The powers of the gods and goddesses were born back into the bodies of human children. These children could be of any culture, religion or country. They usually don't know what they are, and they are called Incarnates. You are one of them..." "What?" "You're an Incarnate..." Kai laughed and shook his head. "You're crazy..." Aeris scoffed and jumped from the counter. "You're also part angel..." "As I said..." "I'm one of them, too... But I don't know which one." "Prove it. Prove that you and I are both some of these Incarnates." "Got any birthmarks?" "One... Why?" "Show me..." "Again... Why?" "Don't question my methods, damn it!" Kai blinked before lifting his shirt to show off the small mark on his hip. Aeris smirked and did the same. The two marks were identical. Gabriel laughed. "Look! They match!" Kai blinked a few times and shook his head. "That's not possible..." "Call Analiese over... She's got the same thing." Aeris smiled as she pulled her shirt back over her birthmark. "This is all some big coincidence!" "That's right... You're Atheist, huh? Gods and goddesses aren't your thing." "And you're polytheistic, aren't you? We must be opposites..." he scoffed. "How can you always turn away from the proof that's right in front of you!? You are a god in human form!" "Prove it." Aeris turned to Gabriel and smiled. "How do I prove it to him?" "His power is linked to emotions... Shock him!" the young girl replied. Aeris nodded and pulled her hair over her shoulder. "Please forgive me for this, Kai..." she whispered, turning back to him and kissing him. Kai's eyes grew wide. For some reason, there was a breeze running through the house. There was only one window, and it was nowhere near them. Aeris stepped back and looked away to try and hide the blush on her cheeks. The breeze became a wind as Kai took a step back. He looked at his hands, feeling the wind twist around his hands and between his fingers. "The hell is this!?" he gasped. "That's the aura of the wind god. It's triggered by emotions... Apparently a shock was in order to activate it." Aeris explained. "How's yours activated?" "I don't know... I don't have a clue about anything that's gotta do with my power..." "Then how do you know that you're one of us?" "That's none of your business." "Fine... But what if you aren't... What if the whole thing about you being a goddess is nothing but a lie..." "Then I'll just be a protector of the gods... Maybe one will pity my humanity or fall for me..." she scoffed. "But you honestly have no idea of the reason behind my beliefs. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to go home..." She turned on her heels and walked towards the door. "I wouldn't have told you what you were if I had known it would make you such a jerk..." Kai couldn't say anything as Aeris walked to the front door, slamming it shut behind her. Gabriel sighed and shook her head. "You shouldn't be so mean!" the young child snapped. "Her parents died after they told her that... Her entire family was a group of humans that protected the Incarnations of divine powers..." Kai scoffed and leaned against the smooth counters. "I just dissed her entire family then, huh?" "Yup! You should say sorry..." "Not now... She'll probably ignore me when I try." "She will, but she'll know that you're at least trying when you call her." He sighed and nodded. "House... Call Aeris... No screen." He waited for an answer. Nothing. "No answer." the house announced. "No s**t..." Kai scoffed. Gabriel smiled. "So... How was the kiss?" He raised an eyebrow and shrugged. "It was shocking..." "In a good or bad way?" "Kid... You scare me..." "But... If she's not what she thinks, the only way she can be anything close is if a god falls for her..." "Uh-huh... So where do gods live? On a mountain?" "Nope! They live in the heavens. It's pretty." "So... This is all new and strange to me." "You'll live in the sky after you gain immortality... IF you can gain immortality. You're not really a god yet... The pure humans have to allow you entrance... The problem is that there aren't any... They're all gone, and what humans have become tried to kill you..." "So... We're screwed..." "Maybe." "God! I'm screwed and I feel like s**t... I can't believe that I dissed Aeris like that... I wish I could just say I'm sorry." Aeris smirked as she listened in. She loved her knowledge of computer systems. When he called, she had used a system override to make it seem like she hadn't answered. Analiese laughed and sat on Aeris' bed. "Man.. And they can't hear us?" she asked. Aeris shook her head. "No... I kind of want to talk to him..." "Because you kissed him? If he wasn't one of us, I would have to ask why... But you have a huge crush on him..." "Ana!" "TRY AND DENY IT!" "Bu-" "TRY TO!" Aeris rolled her eyes and sighed, standing up and walking to her closet. "House... stop the override and link this call." When the screen appeared, Kai was freaking out, pressed up against a wall and panting. Gabriel was laughing. Aeris laughed and smiled. "Apology accepted..." Analiese clapped her hands together. "That's a priceless look on your face, Kai! You'll have an excellent career in acting if you live through the search."
