THE CANOPY OVERHEAD BLOCKED out the moonlight that had lit up the festival. I stumbled over the cold, hard ground. The late winter air chilled me to my bone marrow. My head ached and my vision blurred. I couldn’t remember why I had ventured away from the brightly lit streets of the island. My feet carried me deeper into the dark forest. My senses were screaming angrily at me. Food, I needed food. I was shaking violently, but not from the cold night air. A faint sliver of moonlight broke through the trees and made my bare feet shine. My midnight blue satin dress brushed against my pale ankles.
Suddenly, a twig snapped behind me. Alarmed, I burst into a run. I couldn’t see anything in front me. I was night blind. I could feel my long chocolate brown hair fall out of my bun. My bare feet pounded against the hard earth. It stung my feet to run, but my fear was in control. By the time I had calmed myself down, I couldn’t hear the singing from the streets. Breathing heavily, I stood up and decided to try and find my way back to the festival. Shaking from the cold, I brushed off my dress and turned on my heels. I gasped and took a step back. A man stood in front of me. I knew better than to feel safe now. He gave off a negative energy. The shadow of many ghosts hung around him. His ultra white sharp teeth glistened in the pale moonlight. Abruptly, he was upon me, and I had no time to scream.
