I have a theory about becoming insane. I think that it can sometimes be purely a matter of choice and willpower. If a person truly wishes to be insane, they will be. In Penny's case, she really wanted to dissociated from different parts of herself, and forced it to occur. Essentially, she gave herself multiple personality disorder. The same goes vice verse. If an insane can get the notion in their minds that they CAN be sane, they will have in their power the ability to become sane. It's like quitting smoking, in a way. Mind over matter. I have another theory about insanity, too. It's that EVERYONE has an insane part in them. In some small part of everyone's mind, there's something that says "Who cares? What do consequences matter?". It's not a rebellious side, it's truly a psychopathic side. No emotion, no regret. Sometimes it will kick in, in the interest of self-preservation. When a person undergoes a great shock, a traumatic even. It's similar to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Demence is the part of Penny's brain that is insane. He has no real shame, no emotions at all. His creation, oddly enough, was triggered by a movie. The Dark Knight. Silly as it may seems, the portrayal of the Joker by Heath Ledger made something in Penny snap. She truly became insane for a short time after watching the movie. Every now and then, it will flare up again. It's a truly terrifying concept. It's entirely possible that while in the state of "Demence", Penny could commit murder, and feel no pain over it. Demence is the only male personality. I think that this is likely due to the fact that he is based on the Joker. Demence is sometimes genderless. From a psychological perspective, this is the personality that says the most about the human mind in general. He reflects something hidden in all of us. As I said before, I believe insanity can be "turned off". I think, should Demence become aware that he could be sane by a simple choice, the alternate personality might disappear altogether. This is called "reconciliation". There is a way for each of us to rejoin Penny, the host, as one person. Some day, I'm certain that Penny will be a whole person, with no multiples. But until then, we will all be here, to make her life easier. It is our duty.
