Looking over my last post, I am filled with a slight regret. Not because what I said, but because of how I presented it. Again, I emphasize that I'm not better than the D&D players mentioned, just frustrated in the lack of maturity in those around me. My complaint and cry for change is not to those I know over the internet, but to those I physically meet for tabletop games, which are either high-school friends or my little brother's high-school friends. I can change this with a simple digging around at my local hobby shop. Relatively easy fix, but I still felt the need to address it. I think the problem lies in my location. I live in Florida where the RPG hobby is less than celebrated. I can venture north to Dragon-Con, but the community here is more into model trains than anything else where I live. Maybe one day I'll dare a trek to California to the Games Workshop HQ or WOTC area. That's the future with funds I dream of, not planning.
Now, if my avatar has not changed, you may notice my adoration for the new movie Tron Legacy. Was it that good of a movie? No. No, it wasn't. It was hard to follow at times, the plot seemed convoluted, and, over all, the characters were uninteresting. It was Disney, so what do you expect? I do respect the movie. First, the original Tron is hailed as a cult classic that had a magic of its own. It wasn't phenomenal, but it was sci-fi. Here's a secret: most of the best sci-fi movies have terrible plot. What drives a sci-fi movie is not usually the story, unlike its literary partner, but premise. If the premise is good and it keeps a string of logical ideals and does not veer or contradict those ideals, we are intrigued because we are left to wonder. Tron had that; Tron Legacy continues it. So, while I thought the movie was fun and enjoyable, it was not a great movie. Just a good one that brings inspiration.
Wherever The Matrix fell, Tron Legacy picked up. I won't go into the travesty that is The Matrix, but I will say that Tron Legacy did not disappoint when it came to the envisioning of how a "computer world" should be. I have my own inspirations for Role-plays and stories that I want to explore, hence the celebration via my avatar, but--again--do not misunderstand. It was a good movie worth seeing in theaters, but it was no movie of the year. ((Daft Punk was a wonderful choice for music, by the way. It only embellished the cyber-punk feel))
Speaking of movies of the year, I'm a little disappointed on how The American did. I thought the art-house approach was refreshing. I guess people still want that Jason Bourne movie once a year. xD Anyway, had to get that out. Kudos to Clooney.
Finally, I am making a vow to finish House of Leaves before school starts. I really need to finish it and with MarbleHornets feeding me great entries like "#29", I eagerly await the second coming of "#18". Jesus, I feel the fear and tension just remembering it.
After House of Leaves, I'll be moving onto more Lovecraft. I really want to get Shadow over Innsmouth.
