“You’re Back!”
“Where are we?”
“What did they do to you?”
“What’s going on?”
A tsunami’s worth of questions flooded my throbbing head. My eyes shot around the room as I entered with all the bombardment. Charlie pulled me toward the cot and sat me down. I filtered away the questions, the surroundings, and the people long enough to glance at Charlie as he turned away to walk out the door,
“Charlie.” He quickly shot around and looked toward me with widened hazel eyes.
“Your name is Charlie.” He starred at me. As I looked into him, through the depths of his soul he simply starred at me. His epiphany must have come somehow in those simple words for had stopped dead in his tracks. Everyone around us had stopped and looked on at the spectacle with weary and confused eyes. Before I had the chance to say anything further Charlie shook from the trance and muttered,
“I… why don’t I get something for your ankle…” and with that he darted out of the room.
I turned my head toward everyone to find their bizarre stares. Myrtle being the voice of reason as he has always been broke the silence,
“What the hell was that?”
Aimia, “Wha… um…” I seemed to have lost all my words when I looked at him.
Connor, “Aimia, what happened?”
“Charlie took me to another room.”
Connor, “Yes, and what Happened in that other room.” I felt something pulling the words from me. My natural honest and bluntly truthful self urged to just say what happened, but the protective part of me said that in this confusing situation it would only make matters more confusing. Then as I contemplated my options and as everyone looked at me waiting for an answer I felt a painful twing. Somewhere deep inside me that pulsed through my body. Connor jumped forward as the sharp pain showed on my face. Charlie walked back in,
“I brought some bandages and…” he looked up and realized the tension had not left the room. His words fell so he simply continued on and came over to me and with a Swiss army knife broke the bonds on my feet. A sigh of relief and a twinge of pain came as the rope splintered off my swollen ankle. He cleaned it slightly with rubbing alcohol and pulled away some of the splinters. Then he wrapped it up in a bandage. As this was going on Jane asked,
“What’s going on?”
Charlie ignored her and I tried to answer, “I don’t know.”
Arella, “Well where are we?”
Aimia, “I don’t know.”
Myrtle, “What do you mean you don’t know?”
I shrugged, “I just don’t know what’s going on.” My frustration began to overcome me as it always has when I’m overdone. I was frustrated with these questions, with these mysterious men, with this room, with this situation, but mostly with myself. The person who always has an answer, the girl that can find sunshine on the cloudy days, was left completely starving on a dry and deserted island. I felt my frustration begin to puddle in my eyes.
Jane, “Aimia…” Jane was interrupted by my sudden jerk forward. I felt it again, a sharp pain surging through my body. Charlie quickly cut the rope around my wrists and I fell to the ground. I felt as if knives were running through my body. Tears streamed to the floor as I sat on my hands and knees squinting at the floor. I couldn’t hear everyone around me pleading for an answer to my sudden ailment. Charlie sat me up straight, pulling on my arm firmly and suddenly. For only a moment did I glance at his unsurprised face. What I couldn’t see he could. My eyes twinkled on and off with flecks of neon. I could only feel my pain. I felt like I could throw up, but I couldn’t, the pain was unrelinquishing. My surroundings dissipated and I lost consciousness.
After my episode when I fell asleep Charlie lay me on the cot. He turned around to concerned and angry faces.
Jane, “Who are you?”
Charlie, “My name’s Charlie.”
Connor, “That’s not what she meant.” Connor and Charlie stared daggers into each other.
Myrtle, “Look, we are obviously not going to get any real answers out of you, but the least you could do is give us some clue as to why we are here.” Charlie sighed and scrunched down next to Arella to cut the rope from her ankles and hands,
“Well you are right about one thing. I am not going to give you any real answers.” Jane jumped,
“a*****e, what…”
Charlie interjected quickly, “But, I can assure you that you won’t be here for long.”
Arella, “What are we here for?”
Charlie, “The boss needs Aimia for something, but you will be relocated soon enough.”
Connor, “What do you mean relocated?”
Charlie answered with a tone of impatience, “Look, I don’t have to answer any of your questions. You are lucky you’ve gotten anything out of me. My job is to look after the miss here, and that is it.” He cut the rope from Jane’s wrists with an extra force and moved on to Myrtle.
Arella inquired, “What do you mean job?”
Charlie, “God, you people just don’t quit.” He finished cutting off all the ropes, “I’m going to go and get the doctor. The door is locked so you can’t go anywhere, and don’t try to do anything while I’m gone. I’ll be back in five minutes.” With that the door shut behind him.
Everyone moved around a bit. Connor and Arella joined me near the cot and Myrtle helped Jane. Myrtle asked Connor,
“Are you alright?”
Connor, “Alittle beaten up, but I’ll survive. How about you?”
Myrtle, “Luckily I don’t look half as bad as you or Aimia. Jane, Arella, are you guys ok?”
Arella, “I’m ok other than a bruise or two.”
Jane, “I’m confused. What the heck is going on?”
Myrtle, “I don’t think we are going to get the answer to that question. For now we’ll just have to stick close together and hope for the best.” Charlie walked in followed by a tall lanky man in a white coat. Charlie walked toward me and Jane got up and stood in his way with an evil scowl on her face. When they had finished exchanging dirty looks they moved on to helping the doctor.
